How does a Chiropractor in Columbus help Sciatic Pain

? Ohio

Stay Healthy Your First 100 Years. I'm Dr. Kohl, of Reynoldsburg Chiropractic Center in Columbus Ohio. We're here to give you the answers that you need. A condition that we see a lot of in the office and it's very, very common; is pain that radiates into a leg or sciatic pain. Patients will come in the office and say My sciatic nerve is out.

And the sciatic nerve is an interesting nerve, it made up of several nerves that come out of the last few vertebra of the spine and on the tail bone you have a few nerves that come out as well. These nerves form one big nerve, the Sciatic Nerve. Its the largest and longest nerve in the body and it goes down into your legs.

The sciatic nerve can be pinched due to a variety of things. It could be pinched because of a disc that's out of alignment here in the lower back and we see that a lot. If the vertebra are misaligned, not working correctly, that could cause a pulling or stretching of that nerve as well. Also some of the other more common causes of back pain, a misaligned facet joint and a sacroiliac joint that's misaligned, those two can also cause pain going into your leg.

Just because you have pain going into the leg doesnt mean its the sciatic nerve all of the time. Probably about 40 percent of the time its the sciatic nerves but the pain can also come from one of these other areas as well.

The neat thing is, when you come to see a chiropractor, we'll do an examination, we'll take some x-rays. If we do think its a more serious condition like a herniated disc, a chiropractor can refer you out for an MRI. Many of the treatments we do in a chiropractic office can help pain going into the leg.

The common treatments in a chiropractic office are: adjustments to the spine, massage therapies, physical therapies, exercises; All of these things have proven very effective in treating back and leg pain in a natural and health promoting way.

Again if we see your case might be more serious, you might need injections into the spine, they're called epidural injections, or if a surgery is necessary. If you've gone to see a chiropractor and it hasn't worked for you because it's one of these more serious conditions, at least you know if you have to have these other things done and you try to deal with it in a natural way, you tried a chiropractor first.

The common treatments used in a chiropractic office are usually very effective for conditions like this. If you need to have the epidural injection, you need to have an operation, at that point you'll know you definitely had to have it done.

I recently came across an article that was published in Consumer Reports, everyone has heard of Consumer Reports. We get it at home, we read it to find the best products for our house. In this survey, they had a survey in which they surveyed 14,000 people for lower back pain in particular and what treatments they felt worked out the best.

They asked their readers, between Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Acupuncturists, Specialty Physicians and Primary Care Doctors how satisfied were they with the care that they got.

And that could mean a variety of things;

How comfortable they felt with the staff, the doctor it also of course included how satisfied were they with their care. Did the treatment they get help them feel better? What I like about this study and what is interesting isthe patient satisfaction that was the highest was with Chiropractors.

59 percent were satisfied with Chiropractors, Physical Therapists were 55 percent, Acupuncturists were 53 percent, Specialty Physicians were at 44 percent and Primary Care Doctors were at 34 percent.

So if you have never seen a Chiropractor before and you are not sure if you should or you are skeptical or you are looking for different opinionswe often look to Consumer Reports for what products should we buy.

This study here goes a long way in showing that there are thousands or hundreds of thousands of people across the country that go to see Chiropractors everyday and they are very satisfied with the care that they receive from those Doctors.
