What's The Best Way To Meditate?

Especially when they're starting to meditate, lots of people ask the question "what's the best way to meditate?" And, like most things in life, there's no single correct answer.

There are lots of different ways to meditate and they near enough all have the same end result. It's just that they reach this result in a variety of ways.

So if you've ever asked yourself what's the best way to meditate, take a look at these meditation ideas and see what takes your fancy.

Traditional meditation

This normally involves some form of focus point. You may focus on a flickering candle flame or a point on the wall or ceiling. You may chant a meditation mantra over and over to yourself. There are several variants of this and you can combine some or all of these elements.

Traditional meditation is usually carried out either sitting down or in a special meditation position such as the lotus position that is often used to display people in a meditative state.

You can use a meditation cushion (or just a regular cushion) to make this more comfortable.

Gradually as you focus you'll zone out and start to relax. You can encourage this to happen by breathing deeply whilst you carry out this form of meditation. There are lots of places on line which will give you more help if you decide to go down this route or you can attend a local class if you prefer to learn that way.

Non-traditional meditation

This is increasingly gaining favour as it allows us Westerners to enjoy the best of both worlds.

We can reach a deep state of meditation without having to practice for years and years to get there. So it meets our needs of using meditation to relax and unwind but also our "I want it now" mentality.

Non-traditional meditation normally takes the form of sitting or lying down, donning a set of headphones and listening to a pre-recorded meditation track for 30 or 60 minutes.

The track does all the hard work of getting your brainwaves to slow down enough that they reach a meditative state. Science takes care of the exact frequencies needed to do this and soothing music or the sound of rainfall disguises the binaural beat tones enough that your conscious mind doesn't do a double take and wonder what's happening to you.

Either method will get the desired results. So next time you find yourself asking what's the best way to meditate, just pick one of these methods and actually do it!
