OK. Transport yourself back in time you're walking out of your cave and are shocked to see a sabre-toothed tiger eying its next meal YOU!

What happens next is that part of the most primitive element of your brain, the paleo section, secretes cortisol (amongst other things) and prepares your body for action the fight or flight reaction. Heart rate increases and blood is pumped to your muscles. Eyes dilate. Blood is diverted away from extremities so that you don't lose too much blood if you are injured fighting or running (the expression "I've got cold feet" comes from this phenomenon). Adrenaline is circulated to fuel & facilitate all this activity.

Action time! You either fight the tiger or you run to safety.


Assuming you didn't become Tigger's tea, your body will have exorcised the stress through taking physical action and your body returns to its normal, more relaxed state. The hormonal balance returns.

In the above scenario, the caveman's stress was exorcised by fighting or running. All stress was relieved. If he survived he will have survived with good mental health!

Same goes for you. If you feel the signs of stress, do some physical exercise. Not only is the fight or flight stress relieved but you get the added bonus of endorphins.

Endorphins are the "happy drug" that your brain secretes that produces a euphoric effect and they're not illegal! Become an "addict". Get your fix of endorphins on a regular basis, preferably every day.

Exercise does not have to be sweaty hard work. Twenty minutes walking with the dog or down to the paper shop is enough to trigger the effect. Just try to make your heart beat a little faster for that period of time. Walk a little brisker than normal or choose a hilly route.

An added bonus is the beneficial effect taking regular exercise has on your self-esteem. You will begin to feel good and look good. Increasing your self-esteem, in turn, will help with any procrastination issues you might have, too, as procrastination usually has self-worth concerns at its core.


Finally, make your daily exercise part of your working time in your business. Might sound bizarre, that, but it will encourage you to spend time on exercise. As a great bonus, you will find that the most valuable business ideas occur to you whilst you are exercising. This is due to the creativity generated by relaxing and using the right side of your brain. So there is a good rationale for including it as working time. Call it an "Innovation Session" if you like! Just remember to take a pen & notepad with you when you are exercising you don't want to forget that nugget of an idea you come up with as you climb that hill on your walk!

So, the bottom line is that relaxation helps you to be healthy in mind, body and spirit AND create new ideas for your business (or any other aspect of your life).

Remember innovation and creativity are generated by imagination. This is a right-brain function and you create the best environment for your imagination to flourish through any form of relaxation.
