How to Answer Initial Interview Questions

INTERVIEWERS have one favorite question, or variations of it

, that startle most applicants: It could take the form "Tell me about yourself" or "Describe who you are" or "What can you relate to me that is on this resume which is too long I do not have time to read it". Of course, they are not interested in physical dimensions or birth circumstances or global location or in anything else not related to the position being aspired for.

Truthfully, with several prospective applicants lined-up, some carrying mile-long bio-data folders, the interviewer would certainly appreciate not spending too much time skimming for the most ideal candidates. He, or she, would want to keep the choices to an absolute minimum, which could then proceed to the succeeding recruitment stages, in the shortest possible time.

Therefore the applicant that can, as quickly as is feasible, be convincing that he, or she, has the best qualifications for the job opening, is indeed very well commended, and much deserving of a long second look or further evaluation.

In some training or employment centers, it is termed the "Me-in-30-Seconds" spiel (the exact duration is unimportant), and ii may go something like this:

"I am a Chemical Engineer with more than 20 years work experience in manufacturing companies, mostly internationally based, handling manpower and material resources. I was also employed overseas in the water treatment facilities of the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces, supervising people of various nationalities. More recently, I took a course on call-center agent training program sponsored by the city government."

Examining this short presentation, specific keywords may be found that helped sway the interviewer's interest positively:

engineer- denotes technical orientation and ability

manufacturing denotes exposure to shifting schedules

international denotes familiarity with global standards

supervising- denotes communication and leadership quality

training denotes willingness and effort to learn

Such a concise and informative discourse can only very effectively open the eyes of the interviewer.

ANOTHER question that usually stumps applicants is nonetheless an obvious one, and yet it causes many to fall by the wayside, sometimes stunned to utter silence as the query sinks in.

"Why should we hire you?"

Those that fell by the wayside probably answered something like any of the following, more or less, usually due to lack of anticipation or preparation of a smart answer:

"Because I need the job."

"Because I could use the extra income."

"I think it will help me develop myself."

"I have the necessary qualifications."

"My family expects me to get this job."

"This company is number one for me."

"My teachers believe this is the place for me."

"I know one of the bosses."

"I have many friends here."

"My girlfriend works here."

A good answer should be assertive and full of confidence, emphasizing the advantage the company will have if ever the applicant is hired.

Best reply: "Because I know I can do very well!"

THESE were exactly what I said when I applied for a call center position, and was accepted on first attempt, although I was already way past my prime.
