How to Be a Very Productive and Positive Physical Therapy Practice Owner

As practice owners, months can slip away from us before we realize that we haven't accomplished any of our important goals for our businesses. Where did the time go? Now we panic and keep going full speed ahead! We don't STOP to think about where we are headed.

What is happening here? All too often, by this time, we have lost our focus, we are spinning our wheels, and we are even making poor decisions.

Where are YOU headed and what are you doing to make sure that you are operating at your peak, productively and positively?

I have two important suggestions for you today:

1. Take the time to plan your direction for the next months, year and five years.

If you haven't done this planning, ever, or in the last year, now is the time to start. It is never too late.

In fact, a new calendar year is just around the corner. It is the time to prepare for achieving something of importance next year. If you don't have a plan to guide you at this moment, please do develop one now. Become the master of your future!

The majority of practice owners I know operate without a plan. This is truly a shame.

2. The next important suggestion I have for you is this: Be sure to take time off, so your creativity, energy, and motivation stay high.

For those of you who have great discipline and balance, you can stop reading now. You have probably already mastered this area. For those of you who rarely take time for yourself, let alone a vacation from the business, take good notes.

It is time to give yourself a break!

Why is this important? Because as business owners, our most important and valuable skill is our creativity. And creativity flourishes when we are rested. Have you ever noticed that your best ideas come at times like when you're sleeping or in the shower? To tap into that cherished creativity more often, we need to have downtime.

Here are my 5 tips for giving yourself a "mini-vacation" without losing momentum from your business. (And all 5 are doable no matter what you say about your schedule.)

Read a good book. No, not another marketing or leadership book. Read a fiction book, anything that will let your imagination run free and the creativity flow.

Go for a walk or a drive. Pick a place you haven't been before, just to clear your head.

Have lunch with a friend.

Enjoy a hobby. Golf, tennis, knitting, painting, gardening, whatever it is, give yourself some time to have fun with it.

Play games with friends. Games are an amazing way to let off steam. The idea is to laugh like a kid again.

When my clients get stressed out, I give them an assignment to take time off. It always works like a charm! The pay off for taking breaks can be significant. The best thing to do is to disengage for a while and do something else.

Have fun with it and just enjoy yourself for a few hours. I promise, nothing terrible will happen, and you will be much more creative when you return.

Plan to do at least one of these 5 recommendations within the next week. Watch what happens. Realize how your energy is rejuvenated. Observe how much more productive you become when you take time for fun. Open your mind to the flow of creativity and new ideas.
