We are talking about solar powered cars or hybrid cars, wind power, geothermal power and other sources of renewal sources of energy because the future of fossil fuel looks grim. So it's high time that we start thinking about how we can use alternative energy to our benefit. You will be surprised to know that you can build your own solar powered generator at home with minimal cost provided that you are doing the installation by yourself.
So the big question is how to build a homemade generator? Well let's start with the cost. A homemade solar generator can be built within $1000, not to mention the drastic decrease in your energy bill. But if you are to buy a readymade one it will cost you at least $2000. This solar generator won't power a two storey building but if want more power you can always add more solar panels to your existing one.
The things that you will require to build your own power generator are:
Solar Panels of 12V or 16V
A deep cycle 12V battery ( a 32 amp should do the work)
A battery box for holding the battery safely.
A 12V DC meter to see the charge of your battery
A DC to AC inverter if your appliances run on AC power
Insulated Cables and
A Drill
After you have got everything put the battery in the battery box and place it somewhere safe. Connect the voltage meter to the battery to display the charge. Remember don't discharge your battery below 50% and don't over charge it. After connecting the voltage meter with the battery connect the solar panels and DC inlet to your battery terminals. Place the solar panels in the sun or you can put them on the roof top, just make sure that they get plenty of sunlight and wait till the battery is completely charged.
These types of 12V solar generator can take five hours to get charged completely and can easily run a fan, laptop and small appliances. In short they are good for a single room but if you need more power you can always increase the solar panels or get a more powerful battery. Initially solar generators may seem to cost much but they have long term benefits. There isn't much maintenance cost; you save on your energy bill and as they are environment friendly you will be doing your share in protecting the environment.
