The final answer provides you with the amount of wattage required to give the room good all around illumination.

For task lighting, as in an office, reading chair, or kitchen island, multiply the square footage of the room by 2.5 instead of 1.5. This formula will produce the correct amount of light needed so that it is sufficient to read, cook, crochet, etc.

Hallways require lights every 8-10 feet. The lights should be at least 7 feet from the floor. To determine the width of your chandelier in the foyer, add together the length and width of the foyer [in feet]. This will give you the size of the fixture in inches.
