How to Deal with Content Scraping Basic but practical techniques
Websites and blogs often have to face the stigma of content scraping. What is it and how does it actually harm your reputation?
Content scraping defined, in layman terms, is a method of extracting content from websites just to publish that on MFA websites or Blogs. This is efficiently done through RSS feeds. This means that if you have a great blog, there are scrapers out there who would be looking to steal away all your work just to paste it up on their sites, and that might stop you from achieving your moment of online glory (if they have better SEO skills than you).
Why Has Content Scraping Become A Fearsome Act?
Initially, content scraping was not taken that seriously, most often, web experts thought that the original domain would be deemed a much trusted source as far as search engine rankings are concerned. A blind trust on search engine's ability to recognize the original source was the main reason behind web experts ignoring content scraping. And because they let it pass for some time, content scraping has become more and more advanced, and now it is extremely hard to indentify and differentiate between the imposter and original content. As for search engines, well they are not that good at it as well!
So How Do You Deal With It?
You should never allow anyone to snatch your content, and earn at the expense of all the hard-work that you've put into coming up with that content! Here are some basic ways to help you deal with the scrapers and make sure they lay their hands off your content.
1). Htacces ban
The often suggested way to handle these troublemakers is to simply block their Access to your website. All you have to do is make some changes into your htaccess file, you can find the codes from web, that you will have to enter in your htaccess file.
2). Email The Site Owners
At times, simply emailing the owner, with a threat of filing a DMCA complaint with Google can do the job. Most of them would back out without further ado.
3).Revenge Time!
You can get a little naughty and use a script to have some crappy content set out as a dummy. When their software copies this content, they would be getting some weird texts, funny pictures and multiple loops going back to the host server, resulting in a server crash.
4). Wordpress Plugins
You can use different plugins, especially if you are running your Blog on Wordpress platform, for example the plugin known as "anti-leech" to protect against content scraping. This plugin will share a dummy content while protecting the original content feeds. However, this plugin will also need IP address for effective functioning.
