How to Escape From Sand Traps - The First Time and Every Time

My Top 3 Tips

Of course these tips on 'sand trap' play are only a small part of the game. As we all know the golf game is made up of many aspects for which there are different techniques and applications. Thankfully there are professional teaching methods which have been put to paper by those who are well equipped to impart their knowledge and experience for the betterment of us all.

These are my top three tips for escaping from sand traps. Follow these tips and you will not only save shots but your confidence will grow through the rest of your game. Your stress level will decrease and the enjoyment of your round will flourish. (The following tips are for a right-handed golfer - the reverse applies to a left-handed golfer.)

The Correct Grip

The reason the grip is so important is because it helps to maintain the face of the club-head OPEN before, during and after the swing has finished.

Grip the club and place club-head on the ground. Release pressure on grip and open club-face. Now take your normal grip. Turn both hands slightly to the right of your normal grip. Get the feeling of your right hand more under the grip than normal.

The Set-Up

The whole set-up with stance and alignment is extremely important in so much as it will influence the swing path of the club. You will find you will be aiming well left of the target. However the swing path and club-face will project the ball on its intended line.

With the the correct grip and club in hand set up your feet parallel to your intended ball flight. Now place your front foot left about 10-12cms creating an 'open stance' Align your shoulders square to your feet. Your club-face should now be square to your intended line and open to your stance.

The Correct Swing Path

You are now ready to swing along the path of your feet creating a feeling of an out-to-in swing. The club-face will cut across the sand behind the ball. The sand will lift the ball in the air where it will land softly on the green.

Now you have the correct set-up dig your feet 3cms into the sand and squat down a little for a more solid base. Grip down the club the same distance.( to compensate ) Take your club back along the line of your feet while hinging your wrists at the same time to about a three quarter swing. Without consciously moving your lower body and with the club-face still open, strike the sand about 8-10cms behind the ball. Follow right through the sand and finish your swing.

Other Tips

Tip: For longer shots take a less open stance which will result in a less out to in swing path and/or take a less lofted club e.g. gap wedge, wedge etc

Tip: For shots from wet sand choose a club with less bounce e.g. gap wedge, wedge

Tip: For buried lies square up your stance, turn the club face slightly inward (closed), swing down behind the ball 8-10cms and stop. That's right - no follow through!

So you can see now if you follow these 3 tips the chances are you will escape from the sand every time. Not only will your scores drop and the overall enjoyment of your game improve but your confidence will grow in all other aspects of this wonderful game we all love and enjoy.
