How to Finally Make the Decision to Start Your Own Business! Today!
Ok, so your sick and tired of the same old routine, waking up to the savagely irritating sound of the BEEP BEEP BEEP from your alarm clock, getting the kids ready for school, getting yourself half decent for work, going with the flow of the morning commute, sitting at the office, do a little work, daydream of a life you could have if you just finally made the choice to start your own business, fight the evening traffic to get home and rush around getting dinner ready and all the other chores you need to do before going to sleep just to do it all over again tomorrow!
Sadly, this is the way of life for most people! The people that just won't take that daring and courageous step of finally starting your own business and living in freedom - time freedom and of course financial freedom! So many of us keep on dreaming the dream, and not walking the walk.
So what exactly is stopping you from starting your own business today? What is holding you back?
Be honest with yourself!
Here were my demons a.k.a. EXCUSES that continuously held me back from living my dream (by the way, I managed to get over them and now own a successful business! AND YOU CAN TOO):
- I don't have the money to start a business
- I don't have the time to work on it
- There is so much I don't know how to do
- What if I put in all this effort and it fails?
- What if people around me are not very supportive?
And there were so many other things that prevented me from taking the step such as being comfortable in my regular routine, I didn't like to be out of my comfort zone. Let's face it, starting on a new path can be intimidating and a little scary. I liked my regular pay check (not the amount but the fact that it was there every two weeks). Lastly, I was really worried that I didn't have it in me to run my own business and be successful, this was a bad case of lack of confidence and poor self-esteem.
So how did I overcome these obstacles?
I woke up one morning and asked the crucial question that took me years to figure out...are you ready for it?.....WHY NOT ME? Yes, that was the question that pushed me and started my unrelenting motivation to finally own my own business. Then I went through my "Excuses" one by one and wrote down the reasons why I could make it work.
Then I decided to stop the negative chatter in my head (you can't do it, you don't have the money, your not smart enough etc.) and replaced it with happy and motivating thoughts. I visualized being successful, what I would do, how I would act, where I would go, what it felt like...
When I started getting clammy because I didn't know how to do something, I bought a book on the subject and learned how to do it, I researched it online. I realized that anything I didn't know how to do I could learn! Even if it meant reading before bed when all the chores are done, when the kids are sleeping.
As for not having the time...this was a hard one. When I made the choice to start my own business, I was at home on maternity leave with my son, my first baby. I had a job to go back to but I really wanted to stay home and raise my kids but also live my dream of owning my own business. As a new mom, this was an overwhelming decision since I felt like I had NO TIME to do ANYTHING! Being a stay at home mom is a lot of work! Being a stay at home mom and running a business is even more work! I didn't think I would have the time to accomplish being a good mom and running a successful business. BUT...I overcame this "obstacle" by asking for more help, knowing I was not superwoman and could not do it all. Now I have my son in daycare 2 days a week to allow me to get tons of work done those days and the other days I get to dedicate to my little darling.
As for the people that were not supportive, I removed them completely from that aspect of my life. If someone truly cares about you, they will support you and motivate you to accomplish your dreams and be happy for you! When someone was negative about my plans for my new business, I told them how I felt, that I did not appreciate what they were saying and to refrain from negativity around me. If they did, I did not allow myself to be around them. This may be difficult if it is your significant other. But if you really think about it, why would they say anything to bring you down? To stop you from living your dreams? You really have to question what the real issues are...maybe they are insecure about you being successful, making more money then them, leaving because you are living a new life of freedom, who knows, but that is something they need to deal with, NOT YOU!
Here are YOUR STEPS to start your own business and live your dream:
Step One: Identify exactly what is holding you back, write them down and really give them some thought.
Step Two: For each "excuse", write out how you can overcome this. Ex: I don't have enough money.
Solution: I will start doing the things now that do not cost any money, open a Facebook account and start getting fans to join and get the word out about the new upcoming business.
Step Three: Visualize yourself as a successful business owner. Actually close your eyes and really think about how you will be...what will you be doing? What are you wearing? Where will you be living? What new things do you get to do now that you are a successful business owner with more money and more time then ever? Write them down!
Step Four: Remove the people that are not supportive! I am not saying to dump old friends, get a divorce if your spouse is not backing you up. What I am saying is to not allow yourself to be around any negative people who's mission is to bring you down, not lift you up. When you are around positive, like minded people as yourself, you will accomplish your dreams WAY FASTER!
Step Five: Write down your goals and expectations, be reasonable. Sorry to burst your bubble darlin' but you probably wont make a million dollars your first year! Maybe your second!!!
***Be sure to do up a business plan, this way you will know what to tackle first! Then itemize your tasks in order of importance and get to work! This will help you figure out what you know how to do already and what you need to learn or delegate to other people.
Step Six: Reward Yourself! When you accomplish something that you have on your to-do list, be sure to pat yourself on the back! You deserve it! Go out to dinner when you officially register your business, go to a movie when you write your first eZine...you get the idea.
