How to Get Clients With Facebook

How to Get Clients With Facebook

Facebook is one of the two hottest kids on the social networking block right now (the other being Twitter). Is it really "all that" and can it help you get clients? Straight up: while I've been on Facebook for a while now, I only just got serious about these questions. And the answer is - YES!

So what makes Facebook so great? In a nutshell: relationships. Relationships are the foundation of your success in business, period, and Facebook is an incredible way to create and maintain relationships. For that reason alone, maintaining a presence on Facebook is well worth your time.

Here are 5 ways Facebook will help you build your business relationships (these are just for starters):

1. Meet your clients. With more than 100 million active users on Facebook, chances are good that your past clients are on there. When you friend them on Facebook, they'll see most of your updates and activity, letting them get to know you over time AND keeping you top-of-mind. While nothing will replace person-to-person connection, it's like instant follow-up... almost.

2. Meet business contacts. Facebook gives your potential clients one more way to interact with you. And unlike certain other social networks I could name, it's not all kids. Many of the users are older, more affluent, and better educated. Then there's that 100 million active users thing again - your potential partners are here, too.

3. Get past the gatekeepers. Who else is on Facebook? Highly successful and even famous people - and many of them are very open to connecting. Because social media sites are so relationship-driven, much of what happens on Facebook can't be outsourced to an assistant or gatekeeper. Is there someone you've always wanted to add to your network or reach directly? On Facebook, you probably can.

4. Positioning. By consistently showing up, posting relevant content and contributing to the dialogue, you can increase your credibility and raise your visibility at the same time.

5. Find out what your clients are REALLY thinking - in their own words. In addition to posts, status updates, and conversation, users readily volunteer demographics and psychographic details that you otherwise might not have access to. It's a great way to tap into what's going on with the people you help.

So after you've created your profile, what the heck do you DO? Here's a crash course on how to get your Facebook presence up and running quickly:

1. Keep your profile complete. The amount of information you share is entirely up to you. But make sure you include links to your website(s) on your information page, so that when the people you meet want to find out more, they can do so easily.

2. Start your network. As always, start with the people you know. Many of your friends and family are probably on Facebook already. Go through your address book and add the folks you know, including past clients. (Fascinating detour alert: looking for that long-lost friend from high school or college? Chances are they're on Facebook already, too!)

3. Grow your network. Facebook is a great way to stay connected to people you meet at networking events. Always include a message with your friend request. "We met on at such-and-such, shall we connect here?"

4. Friend influencers and potential partners. Who do you want to connect with? Many influencers on Facebook accept friend requests from their tribe - i.e., people who follow and enjoy their work. Always include a message with your request and and let them know how you're aware of them ("I'm on your list", "I read your blog", "I loved your book", etc).

5. Let people know what you're doing with regular status updates. Stay visible to your network by making regular status updates - they're a great way to let them know what you're up to in your business. If you're going to be giving a class or appearing on a podcast, make an update. If you're on Twitter, you can import your updates with the Twitter application (Google "Twitter on Facebook" to find it).

6. Join groups. Groups are a great way to add more connections to your network. Stay visible and add value by posting (relevant!) information to the group's wall.

7. Reach out. Remember, Facebook is all about relationships. Once a day or so, hop on and watch the newsfeed (a Facebook-generated list of your contact's activity). Reply to what they're up to with comments or notes on their wall.

There's lots more to do on Facebook, like creating a page for your business or a group for a topic you're an expert on. But if you're new to the game, start with your profile for now.

Here's one thing you should NOT do, however: blasting and blatant promotion of what you offer or your email newsletter. Like face-to-face networking, keep the focus on others in your network first. When you give someone your attention with a sincere comment, many times they'll return the favor by checking out your profile for more on you and what you offer.

Like much of the social media, Facebook can turn into a massive time waster if you're not careful. But like everything in marketing, the key is to have a deliberate strategy and hold it accountable (i.e., track your results!).
