How to Get Your Kids to Help With Household Chores

Getting your children to help out with household chores can be a challenge but it

is very important to help them develop self-confidence, a sense of pride, responsibility and a good work ethic. It can also be a great way for them to earn a bit of cash or earn extra privileges while doing their part to help with household chores. Here are a few things to take into consideration when trying to get that extra bit of help that you need from everyone, including the kids.

* Start at an early age and make sure everyone in the family participates. Have all chores written down clearly on individual or family chore charts so that it is clear what needs to be done and when.

* Make sure you are giving each child chores that are age appropriate and safe for them to do.

* Give them several chores to choose from and let them choose which ones they will be responsible for.

* Have everyone take turns doing different chores and/or allow family members to trade chores with other family members. This helps to keep things fair for everyone and prevents boredom.

* Everyone needs a day off every now and then; once a week, on the weekends and/or on birthdays. Give each person a specific day off to rest or choose a certain number of days to take off per week or per month. When a child is overwhelmed by the days activities, homework and more it can also help to let them take an additional day off on that day as well, just try to limit how many times it is allowed per week or month to avoid abuse of that privilege.

* For older children, have them create their own recipe books and they can soon start helping with the cooking as well. You can use a regular binder with page protectors or photo insert pages to hold all recipes. Have them decorate the cover and start it off with a few of their favorite recipes that you usually would cook for them; dinners, desserts and more.

* Be positive and give incentives and/or rewards such as cash or special privileges. Make sure to express that not every chore will be rewarded, some are just them "doing their part" and if they would like to earn extra cash you can create an "extra jobs" list that gives everyone a chance to earn extra cash or even extra privileges by doing "extra" work voluntarily.

Children can greatly benefit from contributing to the family work load; it can be very rewarding in many different ways and can also be a lot of fun.
