Owning your own vineyard may sound like a dream, but in most cases it starts in individual's backyards. Even though it takes a little time for your first harvest, the end result will definitely be well worth the wait. There are only two things you need to successfully grow grapes; location and sunlight. In order to make this happen it's important to learn the basics behind growing grapes. Something as simple as structure can easily be overlooked, but if you use a trellis it can support your vines and help them grow properly. Unfortunately, if you don't have the right location picked out, the trellis won't matter. It's a crucial part of the planning, and eventually the end result. However, some people can't plant their grape vines in sunlight and get enough airflow. If this occurs you can still grow vines, but you will have to guide them towards the light. Keep in mind; vines naturally seek out sunlight so they can flourish.Over time the vines will be heavier due to the grapes shaping up quite nicely. It's your job to provide a durable support system to hold everything in place. Oh, let's not forget about the soil either. While it's not as essential as location or sunlight, it will play a major role. After all, grapes need good soil in order to grow, and poor drainage will help them stay moist at all times. Are you ready to plant your vines? If so; make sure you dig a huge hole where the roots will be able to stretch and grow.We would also recommend soaking the vine roots for at least 2 hours (preferably 6) so they are well watered. The best time to grow grapes around your home is during the spring time. The climate is a bit warmer, the rains will come, and it will allow your vines to find their own path throughout the rest of the year. Once everything is setup you have to be realistic about the results. There will not be a harvest during the first year. During this time you will have to maintain your vines by trimming them. If you keep up with this you could see a harvest the following year.A lot of individuals won't be able to harvest a substantial amount of grapes to stock the wine cellar, but they are a great alternative hobby. All you need to do is provide the right care and decision making to create unbelievable looking grapes. Neighbors will flock to see what you've done, because everyone wants their own vineyard. Heck, there might even be a time when you turn those grapes into wine. Don't get ahead of yourself though, because the growing process should be mastered first. This is an extremely rewarding hobby, and if you know how to grow the grapes it will be a simple process.
