How to Make Sure You Pass You MOT Test

With MOT tests getting much tougher, it is a worry on most people's minds that their car is going to fail

. However, a fail does not necessarily mean you car is a death trap and needs a load of repairs, as a fail can be due to one simple component that could have been fixed earlier on. Carrying out a few simple checks before your MOT test will enable you to complete the repairs before that necessary MOT test and hopefully pass it first time.

First of all check all the lights. Make sure they function correctly and that they automatically come on as soon as you gently press the switch. Also check there is no damage to the lens or casing. Special attention is needed when it comes to the registration plate lights as they need to be tested at dusk or later, since the light is not easily seen in daylight.

Another major fail of MOT's are the tyres. Avoid failing by checking that the tyres are inflated to the proper pressure and that there is still at minimum a 1.6mm tread across three quarters of the tyre. Then inspect the tyres for any protuberances or cuts, which may mean your tyres need to be replaced.

Inspect the windscreen for damage too. If you see any chips or cracks, your windscreen may need replacing. However, a chip or crack less than 10mm on the driver's side or 40mm on the passenger's side is allowed.

You should also check the condition and functionality of each of the following:

-The Horn,

-Hazard lights,

-Mirrors,

-Seat,

-Seat belt,

-Wipers and washers,

-Petrol cap;

-And the Registration plate.

Testing these before your MOT will help you understand the condition of your car and pass that MOT test. Remember to book your MOT a week or so before your MOT date, as any repairs then can be done promptly and your car be retested again before your MOT test date.
