Wearing a uniform to school is something that most kids detest. It is through their clothing that they show off their sense of style and personality. While there are good reasons for schools to institute uniform policies; there are those who believe that these stringent guidelines stifle a child's ability to display their sense of self.Before implementing any changes to a school uniform, it is recommended that you check in with the school's dress code policy. Some policies are more stringent than others. In order to determine what is acceptable to dress up a boring school uniform, you must check with the school administration or refer to the printed dress code policy.There are two fast and easy ways to dress up a school uniform, and kids tend to love both ideas. First is the ID lanyard. Many students carry their student identification cards with them on a daily basis. When this is the case, the ID lanyard can become an incredible way to add personality to the uniform.Boys can wear an ID lanyard made of leather or of nylon featuring skulls (if acceptable). Girls, on the other hand, may love jewelry lanyards as a way to dress up a drab outfit. Jewelry lanyards still feature the typical plastic ID card case; but everything else about them looks like a real necklace. Jewelry lanyards can feature holiday themes, seasonal themes, or can be simple and understated but oh so chic.Shoes are another way to quickly add a new element to Plane Jane clothing. A student can sport colorful kicks to compliment and accentuate the colors in their uniform, or can wear funky heels or ballet flats. If allowable, a student may even want to decorate their shoes with bling. Not only does this save money on expensive shoes; but it provides a fun activity to do with friends or a parent.Don't forget that socks could come into play here too! In schools where the uniform policy is more lenient, one can consider making slight alterations to the actual uniform as a way to brighten it up.Many students do this by sewing on bright monogram letters to pockets or pants. Changing buttons or sewing fabric to lapels is another way to bring color into a boring uniform. Choose bright colors that stand out from the mundane and use them in hair ties, scarves, necklaces, bracelets, shoes, socks, etc. You can even add color to your braces! Older students show off their style through experimental hair colors when the uniform policy permits.While going bright blue may not be the best idea, a student can show off their own personal style with hair that is a deep ruby or some other fashionable shade.School is a place of learning, of course. But in keeping with the trends that kids like to show a bit about themselves through their clothing, it goes a long way to find ways that they can do that while sticking with their school's uniform policy.
