How to Protect Your House Beyond A Home Alarm

One of the most basic investments that any new homeowner can make in his or her home security is installing a good home alarm system

. It's probably the first thing you think of doing after making that first mortgage payment and rearranging the furniture in the living room for the third time. While this is hugely important for protecting your home, your family, and all of your possessions, it does not solve all of your problems and you should not consider your self completely protected! There are many other things that you can do to bolster your home security. Here are some tips for those in the Baton Rouge area to follow.

1. Make sure you turn your alarm on every night!

This might seem obvious, but it is amazing how many people pay for a home alarm, but then neglect to ever use it. It takes two seconds to punch in the code and turn it on before you go to bed. Some do not even turn it when they are on vacation, because they want their neighbors to be able to get in to feed the cat. But with all of the features available now, you can give your neighbors special access codes so that they can get in and out of your house without alerting the police. This way your home will stay safe and your cat will be fed!

2. Lock the doors at night and every time you leave the house.

Many people, especially those living in more residential or suburban neighborhoods, never lock their backdoors. They think that no one will ever have the audacity to just let themselves in to the middle of the day. Unfortunately, home robbers are not usually the considerate type. If they see you leaving the house, and have been hanging out in the neighborhood long enough to know that no one else is home, they may very well hope the fence and see if they can make an easy entrance. So start locking the door, even when you are making a 30-minute dash to the local grocery store.

3. Lock valuables and personal keepsakes in a small safe.

In the unfortunate event that your home does get broken into, you want to make it as difficult as possible for the robbers to find your valuables. Obviously items like flat screen televisions, stereo systems, and family bikes will be scattered throughout the house and garage. But smaller, infrequently used valuables like passports or family heirlooms can and should be better protected. Keep them in a small safe in your house, not on top of your dresser or in the drawer by your bedside table. These are the first places that a robber will check.

4. Talk to your children about home security.

You need to make your children part of the process. This goes beyond telling them not to answer the door when you are not home. Let them know proactive things that they can do to make your house into the safest place it possible can be. Talk to them about locking doors and closing windows, and about fire safety tips like not putting fabric on electronics, or never leaving the kitchen when food is being prepared.
