How to Save on the Cost of a Kitchen Remodeling Project

It is nothing to spend $50,000 completely remodeling a kitchen

. The price tag can be very expensive depending on the materials you choose and the time frame for the completion of the project. Most people want the job completed as quickly as possible because of the disruption that losing the use of your kitchen becomes. However, if you are willing to take some time with the project and make a few sacrifices you can have your new kitchen at a much more affordable rate.

One way you can save money is by doing the prep work yourself. You do not have to be very handy at all to rip out the existing cabinets and pull up the floor. If you do this that is less you will have to pay to the contractor. Cost savings will also come if your appliances are salvageable and can be worked into the new design. If you just don't like the color, they can be painted with special material that will hold up very well over time. Another area where you can save is by doing the painting and wall repair work yourself. Drywall repair is not that difficult. Patch the holes and paint the room before the contractor comes in and then you can go back and touch things up after he is through.

You may not need new cabinets. If they are in good shape and you just don't care for the finish or the style there are alternatives. Like the appliances they can be painted or stained. Painting is the simplest solution. White is a very trendy color in kitchens and your cabinets can be painted white with a little work. Start by using a latex primer like Kilz which will block out the grain in the wood and hide the existing color. It may take a few coats of primer and latex paint to completely hide the old surface. Use a semi-gloss paint which can easily be scrubbed of hand prints and other marks later on.

If you are going with new cabinets, then remove the old ones yourself. They make great storage if you decide to rehang them in the garage. One area you do not want to cut corners is in installation of the cabinets. You have invested a great deal of money in the cabinets and will want to have a professional put them up so that they look awesome. The same with the counter top. Unless you are very skilled at carpentry that is a job for the professionals as well. One way you can save money on the counter though is by going with a material like laminate instead of a composite material or granite. If you don't like the look of the laminates then go with a composite surface like Corian or Durate, while the cost is about twice as much as the laminate it is still half as much as granite.
