How to Make a Hair Scrunchy

Sewing hair scrunchies seems difficult at first but it's not as hard as you may think. Hair scrunchies can be quite expensive these days, with the larger ones ranging up to $10 - $15 depending on where they are sold. Why bother spending so much money on a hair scrunchy you could easily make yourself? Any scrap clothing or fabric you have lying around can be turned into a hair scrunchy and why not add some beads or sequins for extra detail.

Step One

Take your scrap fabric and using your tape measure cut a piece that is roughly 4" wide and up to 20" long. The width can vary depending on how big you want your scrunchy, the bigger you want it the wider you cut the fabric. Simple.

Step Two

Fold the strip of fabric length ways, right sides together. I like to iron it flat because it makes it easier when sewing but you don't have to. I find it nice to use a zigzag stitch as it will stretch naturally with the elastic rather than being rigid, which could eventually break. Once stitched up, turn out to have the right side facing out.

Step Three

Decide on a length of elastic depending on how stretchy you want your hair scrunchie, you won't want it too tight but its length should be a lot smaller than that of the fabric strip. Using your large safety pin, attach it to one end of your elastic and thread through the middle of your fabric strip. Don't forget to keep a hold of it out the other end. Once you have your elastic through you will need to stitch them together. Again, it is better to use a zigzag stitch and the stitch should go in line with the direction the elastic stretches.

At this stage, if you wanted something different, you could thread on some large beads or something decorative.

Step Four

Now your hair scrunchie is starting to shape up and it's not far from finished. You need to tuck the ends together neatly, I will usually fold one side in to hide the free edge and then tuck the other end into it. Make a few small stitches to keep the sides together.

And voila! Now you know how to sew hair scrunchies
