How to Start House Training your Dog
The most important thing to do once you get a dog to their new home is to house train a dog properly so that they know where they are supposed to go.Dogs in general are somewhat clean creature who usually keep their home domain clean. They don't soil their place of eating and the place where they sleep. Also the place they urinate becomes a habit to them. So you have to make use of this natural instinct train dogs in such a way that they accept which area is what in your home. House training a dog is pretty much a tiresome work at the beginning, but once it is done you will have a well behaved dog.
Registering a eating and sleeping domain in your dogs mind:
First thing you have to do is to register the place of eating and sleeping in your dog's mind. To do this follow the below steps:
1. Allocate a place for your dog .Make this area small, but also comfortable enough based on the size of the dog (we can gradually expand the area once the dog gets used to this area). Usually a corner of your garage would do. Also make sure you have some sort of bed for your dog. This place is your starting training area.
2. The next step you have to do is to make the dog understand that this is his/her eating and sleeping place. So for the next 2-3 weeks spend as much time as you can with your dog in this area. Make sure that you dog eats in this area and sleeps in the bed given. After your dog gets used to this they will not soil in their area.
Registering a toilet area domain in your dogs mind:
The next step you have to do to house train your dog is to set a toilet area for them.
1. First of all choose a toilet area in such a manner that is easily accessible to the dog at any time of the day.
2. Dogs usually urinate after having a meal. So after every meal take your dog to his/her "toilet area" and stay there until they soil the area. Once they have soiled the area take them back to your house.
3. Repeat this process until your dog gets where his/her "toilet area" is. Once they have registered a place as their "toilet area" they wont soil any other part of your house.
Please note that at the beginning a dog will usually soil his training area.
After a few weeks time , the dog itself will know which area is what without you accompanying him/her . Once you are sure that you dog has registered its "training area" and "toilet area" you can expand new areas to your dog, by following the above steps based on the area.
Note1: An important point to note is that every dog responds well to praises and treats. So if you dog used the toilet area correctly then you can praise them and give a treat.Note2: Never use punishment to train a dog as it will have negative effect than what you are expecting. A dog in a new home does not know what to do where , so punishing it will only confuse it and may lead the dog to become fearful and aggressive in the future.
