In addition to preventing overdraft charges against your checking account, you may be able to make a deal with the store manager and pay less than sticker price for some items. Paying with cash may not be practical but by minimizing check and debit card usage you guard against bank overdraft fees.
A Balancing Act
Always know exactly how much money you have in yourbank account before you write a check or use your debit card. That means keeping the checkbook balanced. There are instructions and a worksheet on the back of the bank statement that you get in the mail that will tell you how to balance your checkbook. This is easier said than done but it's necessary to guard against overdraft fees. A bank representative will be glad to help with this if you ask.
Use Protection
Sign up for overdraft protection. In the Summer of 2010 the federal government made it mandatory for banks to offer overdraft protection to their customers before charging overdraft fees. This was in response to customer complaints about excessive overdraft fees being charged by banks. Contact your bank about setting up one of yourbank accounts as a back up to guard against overdraft fees if you haven't done so already. Have your bank use one of your accounts as a reserve to take money from to make up the difference for any overdrafts written on your primary account.
