How to Successfully Compel Hiring Managers to Call you for Interviews

Here's an example of my cover letter I have used successfully to compel hiring managers to call me for interviews:

Re: Application for advertised post of Deputy Director: Job Evaluation and Organisational Structure (Ref. AP35/2010)

I read your advertisement in the Sunday Times 10 May 2010 about an advertised position of Deputy Director: Job Evaluation and Organisational Structure.

I am a mature, decisive and energetic person who is result focused with proven experience of working on Job Evaluation within the higher education environment.

Here are the reasons why I am qualified to fill the advertised position:

Skills:

I am a qualified Job Evaluation Officer.

I have excellent Job Evaluation skills.

I have a working knowledge of Persal Payroll system.

I have knowledge of the staff establishment and organizational structure.

The above skills will help your organization to create an environment of equal pay for work of equal value. This would minimize unwanted grievances that could lead to strike and loss of revenue for the organization. The ultimate benefit for your organization would be improved organizational performance and effectiveness.

Achievements:

I successfully evaluated 800 posts in my last employment.

The above achievement has enabled me to successfully plan, organize and coordinate multiple tasks and to manage huge projects.

When I am appointed, needless to say, I will hit the ground running as I already possess the Job Evaluation skills and qualifications as required from the post incumbent.

I would appreciate it if I can be given an opportunity to transfer my skills to your organization.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Justice Mandhla

PS: I will create an environment of Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value and help avoid unwanted strikes while enhancing harmonious Employer/Employee Relationship.

From my cover letter above here are the things you need to note:

Step # 1: I have proven that I am the right person for the job. In one line tell the employer what you can do.... for instance, "I am a seasoned Job Evaluation Officer with 8 years hands-on experience in the higher education field." Tailor your CV to suit the advert you're replying to. Delete the qualifications and details that are not relevant to the job you're applying for. And flesh out the bits that are relevant. Don't make your CV longer than four pages.

Step # 2: I have shown the prospective employer how my skills will help him. Emphasize your suitability by repeating keywords appropriate for the job you're applying for. If the company repeat the words "Equal pay for work of equal value", try and include this phrase elsewhere in your cover letter.

Step # 3: I have described what my achievements have taught me. Quantify your achievements with numbers, volumes and values. For example, don't just say you created a website. Say you created a website that brought in R500 000 thousands in revenue for your last employer.

Step # 4: I have created an instant impact. I told the employer that I successfully evaluated 800 posts in my last employment. Use action words to describe your achievements e.g. "increased", "achieved", "succeeded", "developed"... Avoid words like "assisted", "aided" and "participated in". Instead use words like: "co-wrote", "co-designed", "as a member of the team".

Step # 5: Let your talents shine through. Keep your CV simple and easy to look at. Underline and bold keywords.

NB: Add a "PS" to your cover letter. Use it to highlight the key benefit for the employer when he recruits you.

The reason a "PS" is so effective is, after reading your cover letter; most recruiters go straight to the signature and the name to see who sent the letter to them. They won't be able to avoid a clear "PS" with an irresistible promise.

Your cover letter has to sell you and your skills faster than a TV advert. Most interviewers decide to chuck your CV or invite you to an interview within one minute of reading your cover letter. So to land that job fast, grab the hiring manager's attention straight away with a compelling cover letter.
