How to Transition into a New Running Shoe
Every now and then, you will have to replace your running shoes. What if the running shoe that you normally buy isn't being produced anymore? Here's how to get use to new running shoes.
Use good running form - No matter what shoe you use, you want to be as relaxed as possible. You want to feel relaxed when you run in your shoes. Generally speaking, you want to land on your midfoot and keep your feet under your hips. Keep your stride short and lean forward. Land as softly as you can and make your feet roll forward, like wheels, instead of bounding and pushing off.
Ease into your training with them - Begin using your new shoes on short, slow runs a few times per week for the first two weeks. This will help the materials conform a bit to your feet (breaking in), and your feet accustomed to the unique construction and other characteristics of the shoe, before your longer training runs. Doing too much, too fast in new shoes can cause blisters and even some injuries.
Try to find your sweet spot - Running should feel as frictionless as possible. As stated above, you want to be able roll smoothly forward on your feet. If there is a lot of jolting while running in your new shoes, you need to adjust how and where you land and how you leave the ground. If you experience jolting no matter how much you change your running form, then the shoe is probably not meant for you. That is why it is important to try the shoe on at the store and run a few minutes outside or on the sales floor. If the store doesn't allow you to, then shop somewhere else. It's your money on the line here.
