Some people are curious about using a different operating system

The first thing that you need to do is to get a Live CD for Linux. Some stores will have Live CD's that you can purchase for a very cheap price. You can go to websites like Ubuntu and download the CD and burn it to a blank disk of your own. You can request a free CD from many Linux distributions. You can also buy a Linux magazine as many come with a CD in them with an operating system on them.

Once you have the CD, put it in the CD-ROM and shut down the PC. When you turn it back on you should get an option to boot the computer normally or to boot from the CD. If you do boot from the CD, it is not going to erase or ruin your computer. The operating system will run off the CD and you can try it out all you want. Once you shut down, all the changes you made will be lost, but you can keep using the CD for as long as you want.

There are a few considerations that you need to keep in mind. There are many different Linux distributions or versions that you can try. Ubuntu is a good one to start with but there are many others to try. A Live CD will run slower than if you had the operating system installed to the machine.
