How to attract & retain highly skilled employees
How to attract & retain highly skilled employees
Most companies have trouble attracting and retaining highly skilled employees and this is because of one main issue. The company is just not good enough or just not worth spending time, expertise and effort for. Today, I will be offering top tips for you to ponder upon whether you are a large multinational company or a small local business owner.
1) Work on your company's reputation
If you only have money in mind and anything and everything that you think would lead to it and nothing else, then don't bother reading the rest. A company's reputation is very important. My mother works for IBM the software/computer company and she absolutely loves it because it treats employees like my mother very well. I personally have told many people about what it's like working for IBM and I'm sure many would have bragged about the bonuses and how family-oriented the company is to their friends/relatives. That builds the company's reputation as one company to work for. On the other hand, company A (Cannot be named), doesn't treat their employees well and in fact the opposite. Their employees are constantly complaining about what's lacking and what's not so much so that I have some people who would not only apply for jobs there but also buy their products and services because of that. To build your company's reputation as a 'magnet company', read more of our tips below.
2) Attract top job seekers
One of the ways to attract job seekers is to sell your company. Job seekers are 'shopping' for jobs. With almost everyone in the world having access to internet, finding a job is as easy as a few clicks of the mouse, literally. Advertising your job openings in a newspaper can be very expensive and you can work on very limited text. Most people do not look for jobs in the newspaper anymore but turn to job portals instead. A good way to 'market' your jobs is to advertise or get them listed in job portals in your country/region. Seeking Gulf offers unlimited text description and text requirements on top of free logo, video and photo uploads of your company for employers in the gulf region. Describe the job scope clearly. If possible try to list all the benefits and privileges your company is offering. If the job offer is attractive enough you'll find that most relevant job seekers will be flooding your mail box with their resumes. From there, you can sort out which candidates are worth interviewing for.
3) Salary
Nursing is in high demand simply because not many like the idea of a physically and mentally draining job and many nurses leave their jobs after some years simply because some hospitals are understaffed, they're overworked, underpaid and under appreciated. And these are not characteristic of a good company to work for. Think carefully about how much, your employee is worth and set a salary higher than what other companies are paying. Of course you'll have to make sure you get the right man for the right job or else your effort would have gone to waste. The salary should not remain stagnant or stingily left the way it is after years of commitment and service. An excellent company would acknowledge this and offer a great increment annually. Make sure you state it in your job advertisement.
4) Employee's benefits & privileges
Benefits and privileges are ways to attract job seekers. On top of the 'usual' benefits that are being offered, try be a little bit more generous and give employees longer annual leave, cash incentives and gifts during festive seasons, holiday subsidies or allowances, frequent retreats, and scholarships for employees' children. These are just some examples. Be creative and think about what you had like if you were an employee or ask your employees what they'd like.
5) Well-staffed
Make sure your organization is well staffed. A big turn off for any employee would be an organization that is under staffed. These employees receive a greater amount of work, responsibilities and bigger work commitments. Do not try to save money by employing 5 men for a 10 men job because you might just lose that 5.
6) Training your employees
A great organization would focus on employees' growth which really would contribute to the growth of the company. Send your employees for training and development courses. It would put them in better stead and perform more confidently with new skills under their belts.
7) Acknowledging & rewarding their efforts
Rewards most of the time equates to motivation. Acknowledging your employees' efforts does not only mean commending them for a job well-done but also for a job not so well-done but deserves acknowledgment for the effort and time that has been put in. And although acknowledging one's hard work and achievement alone motivates sometimes, it doesn't work as much in the long run. Rewarding them with cash incentives, gifts and promotion would be well-received. It does not only push them to work harder and perform better but also push others around them as well.
We hope these tips will help your company be the 'magnet company' for job seekers and retain your best employees. If you're operating and based in the gulf region and wish to advertise your job openings with us, please do so by visiting http://www.seekinggulf.com
