If you're in a 12-step program you can have a great time on New Years DC. You don't have to get drunk and run from bar to bar or party to party to have fun. On the other hand if you're invited to a close friend's party you can either volunteer to be a designated driver but just make sure you go with some other sober friends so if the temptation to drink becomes too great you're amongst people that understand and you can just leave.
There are several situations you can encounter sober on new year's eve dc and not all of them are great for your sobriety. As mentioned, we suggest that you never go to a New Year's Eve party where there's alcohol without bringing some sober friends along. Not doing this can be very dangerous especially if you're early in your sobriety because just watching other people drink can be a big trigger to relapse. You can always tell yourself, "I'll have just one drink," or "No one will ever know." Not a good idea.
There are so many things going on in the sober community on New Years DC that if you are already enmeshed in your 12-step program you will no doubt hear about several "sober parties" which are fun because as we said before you don't need to be drunk or on drugs to have fun!!!
There is so much pressure for non-alcoholics to get smashed on dc new years' eve. Most of the time it's amateur night and by the time it's midnight people are so drunk because they think they have to be that they're either passed out or throwing up somewhere and never even get to celebrate the at the stroke of midnight.
Then there's the danger of getting home. In DC there is public transit but we can't tell you how many times the designated driver has had a few too many early in the evening truly believing they'll be able to drive home safely. This can endanger everyone they came with so no matter the cost New Years DC suggests taking a taxi home and not risk getting in the car if you've seen your designated driver have just one drink. If you've been sober for several years and have some other sober friends with you at a party, step in and insist that you drive the group home if it's convenient for you. Safety should always come first, and unfortunately on New Year's Eve it's not safe out there on the roads.
