How to find a new hairdresser
Do you want to revolutionise your look? Are you looking for a fresh new appearance
that transforms how people view you or how you feel about yourself?
If so, you have two very important considerations - where you should go for your makeover and which style is right for you.
To help you make the right decision about the former, I've put together five steps to finding the salon to suit you.
1. If you've found a possible candidate for the role of your new hairdresser, then you need to make sure they come up to scratch. First of all, as this is going to be a brand new look for you, it's important that you go with a more experienced stylist. Junior stylists may be cheaper - and many of them are very good - but they're probably better for maintaining your style, rather than creating it.
2. Is your hairdresser very busy? The industry survives on word-of-mouth and regular customers, so a busy hairdresser is usually a very good one. While it may be difficult to get an appointment, they'll be worth waiting for, so book up in advance and then spend some time thinking about your style.
3. Get a consultation before confirming your booking. You'll want to get a feel for the salon itself and whether the hairdresser fully understands what you want. The better ones won't just say 'yes, we can do that', they'll offer some useful suggestions. Maybe your face isn't the right shape for the do you're asking for. Therefore the cut may need adapting. It's much better to get something that suits you than a good style that doesn't look right.
4. Ask friends for recommendations. As I've already said, word-of-mouth is extremely important for the hairdressing industry. If someone you know has a great hair cut and have been going to the same salon for many years, ask them about it and go along for for a visit. But, whatever you do, don't copy their hairstyle!
5. Once you've found one you like, it's all about how you communicate what you want. Taking in a photo of a hair style you like, either of a celebrity or from a hair magazine, can be a very good idea. However, remember that it's a 2D image and, as such, you may need to contribute some verbal directions as to what you have in mind. Explain what you do and don't like about previous styles you've had and the mistakes what you want them to avoid. Be clear and concise and you should get exactly what you want.
