How to grow in your career and spot the ways to advance
I have been working for 4 years in the IT field and 2.5 years in myfamily's confectionary chain. It has been an interesting experiencelooking at all the various situations between my colleagues and theirsupervisors. Sometimes its the boss himself. Some rise really fast andothers seemingly self-destruct. Personally I paid more attention tothe good ones to learn their methods, although the bad ones tend todemonstrate what not to do!
I once saw an employee who had been working in the company for a fewyears. All this time I thought she was doing fine. But as I got closerto my colleagues, I learnt that she had refused to do certain types ofwork in her department. This is against her other colleagues who tookup other tasks in their stride. I had spoken to her before and feltshe did have a sensible head on her shoulders so I did not offer anyunsolicited advice. Personally, as long as the task is not toodemeaning, I can take it up. If there are certain decisions you mightneed to make you have to consider them in the context of your career. You should even think about what your peers in the industry have todeal with. Unless you are content to be where you are. Remember thatthose who are willing to move for a company will also move in the saidcompany.
Office Politics
Office politics is an issue for most companies, sometimes its biggerfor bigger companies. Sometimes it could be due to the many levels ofhierarchy. It is not possible to avoid office politics. There isplenty of advice to avoid politics but I say different. It woulddepend on the politics involved. If indulging in long office hours isrequired to impress your colleagues and your supervisor then you maywant to go for it. That is just the price to pay for careeradvancement. You may need to help your colleagues too. As long as theydon't task you to make the coffee. There could be a fine line betweenfriendship and politics though. If it is all within your conscience, then a limited run is possible and acceptable.
Priorities
If you do just everything your boss throws at you, then you are doingjust ok. But if you work smart, you could find yourself getting aheadand maybe faster too. Take a moment to think about your supervisor andwhat he would consider in order to promote you or give you that raise. As long as you don't have to kiss his ass, go for it. Sometimes, youcan get away with leaving some things undone if you manage toaccomplish something really important elsewhere. I will never forgetwhen a particular boss was telling us all that if a salesperson couldbring in top notch sales figures, he could stroll into office as andwhen he liked, which was exactly what a sales manager was doing anyway.
