Have you been asked to take responsibility for organising the New Year's celebrations? Here are 10 steps to planning a great night.
1. Your first decision needs to be what type of evening you're looking for. Do you want to host a house party, stay in and watch TV, have a nice meal with friends or party like it's 1999.
2. Next up, decide who you intend to spend New Year with. Will it be your partner? A group of old friends? Your family? Chances are you'll have more than one option, so decide nice and early and let others down gently.
3. If you've decided to go for a nice meal either in place of or ahead of the main celebrations, then you'll need to find suitable restaurants in your area. Depending on the place, you may need to reserve a table well in advance to avoid disappointment.
4. If you're going onto a pub, bar or club to see the new year in, then you'll have to choose somewhere that's ideal for your group. Start by drawing up a list of venues in the city, town or area you wish to go out in and then see what entertainment they have on, what prices they're charging and whether they have availability. Then book something up quickly to avoid having to turn to a lesser option.
5. Now it's time to think about how you're going to get to and from your intended New Year's Eve venue. One of your group may be happy to drive, otherwise you're going to have to rely on a lift from someone else or a taxi. If it's the latter, then beware that many firms will charge a higher price for New Year pick-ups and they'll get booked up quickly from midnight onwards.
6. If you'd prefer not to have to bother with the arranging transport to and from the venue, one option may be to book a hotel nearby. That way, you can walk back at whatever time you want to. Find hotels in the area and compare rates and availability before booking.
7. Once you've arranged all the fine details, you may need to collect money from your friends so everything can be paid for. You'll also need to make them aware of the time of taxis, hotel and restaurant arrangements and the venue's dress code.
8. The dress code for the evening could be anything from formal attire to fancy dress, so you may need to do some shopping ahead of the big day. Starting early may be a good idea, although many sales will begin on December 26th and you might find a bargain.
9. You'll also want to make sure your hair looks the part on the evening, so making an appointment with a hairdresser could be important. If your existing salon is already booked up or you want to splash the cash and try a higher-end hairstylist, why not use a directory to find a list of hairdressers in your city?
10. Now all that's left is to look forward to the big night and have fun when you get there.
