If the starfish is still alive, do not ever think of taking it home with you. Instead, return it to the ocean.

Clean the starfish. Some choose to clean the starfish while others do not. Cleaning is optional. Do the cleaning process before you preserve the fish. Mix a small amount of detergent in a pail of water. For best results, soak the fish in alcohol or formalin. Do this for 48 hours. If you do not want to soak the fish in chemical agent, make sure that you dry the fish right away after washing.

Dry the fish. Use direct sunlight to dry your starfish. Pay attention to the arm. Weigh down each arm of the fish in order to prevent curling.

Store properly. While the starfish is drying, expect foul odor. This is normal and should dissipate once dried. Store the fish in a dry area of your home. There are many ways to display a starfish.
