How to stick to your New Year's resolution


Before you run out to buy the latest self-help book to help you achieve your New Year's resolution, take a moment to find out why it probably won't help. We've all read books on self-improvement to learn what we need to know about success. However, the fact remains that books while highly informational in nature; simply cannot offer lasting change.

A book can provide you with the information you need to be successful at anything you want to achieve. That would be perfect if the issue was as simple as knowing what to do. Most people know they should not procrastinate or overeat or sabotage their success, but still they fail to stick with the goal long enough to succeed.

Therein lies the problem. Success requires a lifelong commitment to making good choices. It must become part of who you are as a person. Until you have the habits that compel you to do those things instinctively it will be nearly impossible to reach any goal, be it weight loss, wealth building or just plain happiness.


That is why no book, gadget, or pill will ever help you get rich, lose weight or be happy quickly and permanently. No matter what they say or how many pictures of sexy bodies or cash or happy people you see, it's as real as Santa Claus.

Let me repeat this to be 100% sure you really understand.

An easy way doesn't exist.

Stop trying to find an easy way. The easy road will always lead you to the worst outcome with a smaller bank account.

For those of you who are still reading instead of ignoring my warning to chase unicorns, I do have some tips to help you traverse the tougher road that leads to true, long term success. As I mentioned earlier you need to establish a set of habits that you can't help but do every day. Once these habits are second nature, success is nearly guaranteed.

How do you develop these habits? The best way I've found to develop these habits is to train you mind and body. Your success at any goal begins and ends in your mind. I suggest finding a good mind body workout and make it a part of your daily routine!

For your benefit, I've collected some of my favorite exercise motivation tips. None of these are a quick fix but they will help you along your journey.

Start. Don't wait for some perfect time. Now is the perfect time.

Never listen to excuses from the "bad you". This voice is Failure Incarnate. Make time to work out no matter what.

Work out your mind and body at least 5-6 days a week. The best solution I've found to do both of these things at once can be found here.

If you must miss a day, never miss more than two days in a row, that the road to the dark side

Overwhelming pain is bad, but some pain during a good exercise session is normal. The pain you feel is weakness leaving your body!

During your workout a voice will pop in telling you to stop. This is the "old" you. Every rep you do beyond that quit point leaves the "old' you behind.

If you slip, let it go. Forgive yourself right away and get back on track as soon as possible. Don't beat yourself up over a slip. STAY FOCUSED.

If your muscles are sore, don't let that stop you. Do a light workout, such as yoga or easy cardio. This will make you less sore and burn calories.


Don't totally deprive yourself of your favorite foods. Instead, eat them in moderation, and work out a little harder the next day.

Don't obsess over your weight! Sometimes it'll seem like you're making no progress, but you're actually gaining muscle, which is heavier than fat.

Finish. Once you reach your fitness goal, you must maintain it! Remember this must become part of your life from now on or it will slip away 10 times faster that it took to achieve.
