How to stop hair loss and re-generate new hair growth

Halo Elite laser therapy reverses the cycle of follicular miniaturisation by stimulating the hair follicles via cellular energy transfer. The laser beam penetrates the hair follicles on the scalp to the dermal papillae (650nm for correct penetration and optimal absorption by hair follicle cells) and this photostimulation by red and near IR light activates mitochondrial respiratory chain components, inducing a signalling cascade that promotes cellular proliferation.

The initial absorption of light by cytochrome oxidase (an integral mitochondrial membrane protein and a key photacceptor of light within this spectral range, depending on oxidative state) is responsible for these events, which result in accelerated electron transport and increased ATP synthesis. Cytochrome c oxidase is the terminal enzyme of the electron transport chain which converts ADP to ATP. This provides energy for renewed cell division in the matrix of the hair follicle where cells differentiate, and those forming the hair shaft undergo keratinisation.

In this way Halo Elite laser therapy enhances cellular metabolism, but also increases capillary diameter which in turn increases the oxygen and nutrient supply to hair follicles, promoting the growth of thicker and healthier hair. The treatment significantly increases hair counts and improves the thickness and quality of the hair shafts. The hood of the Halo Elite, with 171 true laser diodes, provides full and even coverage for optimal results.

Dr Michael Markou*, one of the world's most renowned hair transplant surgeons, published his own research on the effects of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on hair loss in the International Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology in 2003. The results showed hair count increase of 93.5% when all temporal and vertex patients were combined, and both sexes and all areas of the scalp demonstrated significant improvement in hair growth as well as a 78.9% increase in hair tensile strength;

Luminary Industries worked with Dr Markou to design the Halo Elite device exactly in-line with his research findings (650nm, 5mW) and to provide full and even scalp coverage (the hood of the device comprises 171 true laser diodes). The real research was in using Gausian beams to ensure 100% coverage wherever the head is positioned under the hood. We have also invested heavily in producing two cooling systems within the Halo Elite hood which prevents any deviation from 650nm and also means that the laser diodes will not overheat, even when in use all day (Ashley will have mentioned that we are able to provide a 5 year warranty for this reason). Perspiration on the scalp affects penetration of laser beams, so the cooling system is designed to maintain a cool scalp for optimal patient results and to allow individuals to be treated without the need to re-style hair post treatment.

The HALO Elite provides LLLT and is classified as a Class 3A cosmetic laser, as recognised by the FDA. LLLT will not change or alter molecular structures - it stimulates the body's mechanism to repair and heal itself. There are many publications that document the benefits of LLLT in relation to wound healing mechanisms and indeed it is reported that LLLT Photomedicine is effective with regard to stimulating hair growth mechanisms (I have attached a couple of papers). LLLT has been used in medicine for over 40 years now.

Dr Markou worked with Lexington on developing the Hairmax comb (again, specifications in-line with his findings of 650nm for hair regrowth on the scalp) which received FDA clearance in 2007, indicated to promote hair growth in males with androgenetic alopecia who have Norwood Hamilton Classifications of IIa to V and Fitzpatrick Skin Types I to IV.' The Halo Elite is the only hood device in-line with the FDA trial specifications that provides full and even scalp coverage. There are a few imitations on the market that give poor results due to incorrect specifications.
