Humayun's Tomb, one of New Delhi's proudest buildings:
Humayun's Tomb in Delhi is a magnificent building which stands as a majestic memorial of the Moghul Emperor Humayun. In fact Delhi is noted for its multitude of historic Mughal architecture which displays the architectural magnificence of the Mughal dynasties.
Humayun was the son of the first Moghul Emperor Babur. Humayun held the throne of his kingdom for a decade; however, he was subsequently expelled and found refuge in the court of the Safavid Shah of Persia, who was to help him regain the throne of Delhi in the year 1555. Unfortunately Humayun died a year later and Hamida Begum, his Persian wife took charge of the construction of Humayun's Tomb. The selected architect was Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath, a Persian who had earlier created buildings in Herat (now in Afghanistan) and other sites.
The tomb of Humayun initiated some of the customary designs that would later be featured in many Mughal era tombs. Situated in a geometrically arrayed garden, it contains a network of many channels of water, probably intending to present a vision of paradise.
The building's architectural form is distinctively Persian, and its principal chamber shows a similarity with that of Oljeytu, a ruler of Persia of the Mongol Ilkhanid Dynasty. Humayun's Tomb has the distinction of being the initial building in India to incorporate the double dome central to Persian architecture, and is acclaimed for its elegant proportions. The tomb is constructed principally of red sandstone with black and white marble elements. The use of marble is emphasized in the dome, constructed of white marble and the borders of the building. As typical of the tombs of Mughal rulers, Humayun's Tomb is placed on a platform, or podium.
On the other hand the typically Indian characteristics of the architecture can be considered to be the chhatris or small kiosks placed on the roof of the structure. The tomb is also recognized for its carved stone screens and inlaid tile work and carvings which display both Persian and Indian decorative features.
A visit to Humayun's Tomb is always a rewarding experience for visitors to Delhi. When selecting New Delhi hotels, a name that springs to mind is the Shangri-La's - Eros Hotel New Delhi.
