Ideas For Essays That Worked For Students Just Like You

The essay is an important part of any student's scholastic career

. You will likely write hundreds of essays from eighth grade all the way through college. Understanding how to write strong essays is critical to your success as a student, no matter the subject.

Some students feel frustrated when faced with an essay. They don't feel they write "good" essays. Quite often, they simply don't have the ideas that can help them write a paper successfully. We've talked to students with top grades to ask them what tips they would give any student writing an essay, here is what they had to say:

"Learn good organizational skills." - Jaime. This is a great tip for writing as staying organized can help you write well and sometimes even write more quickly than you expected. You'll have all of your materials at hand and won't worry about misplacing anything when you are organized. The student who loses books, forgets deadlines and has other organizational challenges is one who is going to have a challenging time with an essay. Learn good time management and organizational skills and this will certainly help with writing and the rest of your schoolwork.

"Always read the directions." - Charles. We think Charles has a great suggestion here. Many teachers will say, "Great essay. Did not follow the directions." So you'll lose a full letter grade for not following the directions, even though your paper is excellent. Don't let your anxiety over writing get the best of you. Sit down calmly and re-read the directions out loud. Make sure you understand them and if you don't, ask the teacher. Then you are ready to start the assignment.

"Find your essay topic on the first day." - Wendy. This is a fine tip for your essay writing. Many students struggle with finding the right topic for their assignment, thinking it has to be the "right" topic. Quite often, they've got plenty of good ideas. Force yourself to come up with a good topic on the first day so you can begin the research and writing immediately. This will help you plan and prepare your essay well. Spending a few days or a week finding your topic can put you way behind everyone else.

"Don't be afraid to ask for help." - Sam. This is a very useful tip. For the student who struggles with an essay, don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether going to your teacher or the school tutoring service, you'll find someone to help you with your writing. This can make you a better writer and researcher. Everyone has to learn how to write, it is a learned skill that takes practice and a bit of patience. Being afraid to ask for help only means you delay someone helping you, causing you to get poor grades and to be filled with anxiety over something you don't need to be anxious about.

"Put aside time each day to work on your paper." - Tina. We think this is a great tip for your essay writing. Especially if you are having trouble writing essays, planning out some time each day to write will make it much easier for you. By avoiding writing the essay and not spending time on it, you are actually making it harder for yourself. Writing the paper each day will help you become familiar with the material and will make you a stronger student who can write better essays.
