Design and layout

Pale, neutral and light decor will make the space look bigger, but if you want a splash of quirky colour you could always do a colourful border or paint halfway up the wall with a dado rail around the room.

Your chosen cot could predict the style of the room. Its not a good idea to mix light and dark woods, but you can combine furniture thats in the same wood. Old furniture can be given a nursery look with pretty new handles.

Keep to the basics. You need a cot and a changing table but look for a changing table that has storage underneath so you can clear away all the clutter. A tidy space will always look bigger.

There should be at least two lamps: one a proper table lamp, overhead light or standing lamp, and another which acts more like a night light soft and dimmable.

Many homes these days have hardwood or laminate flooring, but for a nursery fitted carpet will be cosier and will give comfortable flooring for baby to sit and play later on.

Have a mirror somewhere. They dont take up much space and babies love to make faces in them. A large mirror along one wall would give the illusion of a bigger room.

Storage boxes for toys will probably be too bulky for a small room. Use big colour-coordinated bags instead and hang them from hooks on the walls. This will keep the floor clutter-free and thereby create the illusion of there being more space.

There are other little personalised touches you can do which wont take up too much space. If you have a boy, hang a giant framed James Bond poster or cartoon favourite on the wall. A vintage model biplane hung at a dramatic angle looks great too. If you have a girl, suspend a necklace of paper butterflies from the ceiling, or hang some pretty patchwork bunting.

Safety

When your nursery is finished, get on your hands and knees and look at the room from the perspective of a baby. Eliminate any sharp edges and fix heavy items that may topple over. Can you see anything that can be a choking hazard or is small enough to swallow? Make sure the blind cords are well out of reach (shutters are an attractive, safer option).

Make sure mobiles are safely suspended, pictures are securely hung and not near the cot, and that you have read all the safety instructions related to any new furnishings or toys.
