If You Want A Healthy Orchid, Information Is Your Secret Key To Success
To a beginner, the ton of information available for keeping orchids can be scary
. The truth of the matter however, is that there are only a few key things you need to know to get your orchid plant to bloom frequently and last for years to come.
There are many different things to know, including which climates they grow best in as well as all of the different types there are. There are essentially three parts to an orchid, the petals, the column, sepals, and the lip which is also referred to as a petal. There are three main petals as well as three sepals.
Orchids are actually the second largest in the Natural Order and are extremely diverse. There are literally thousands of different types of orchids as well as hundreds of hybrid mixes which people have managed to create over the years. These orchid flowers have many different characteristics, each one unique in its own way. There are orchids of just about every color, ranging widely in both shape and size.
Many familiar orchid species grow wild in tropical environments all over the globe. Owing to their great diversity, they are at home in a wide range of climates and as such occur naturally on every continent except Antarctica. The orchids which tend to grow on the ground, mostly in marshes, are referred to as terrestrial orchids. Two different kinds of orchids which do grow on the ground are called Cymbidium and Paphiopedilum. There is a second type of orchid which tends to grow on the trees and rocks, and they are referred to as epiphytic orchids. These orchids can have either very thick or very thin roots, which are used to hold on to the rocks, taking in nutrients for life and absorbing any sunlight which reaches them.
A more rare type of orchids is called Saprophytic, and there arent a lot of them around the world at all. Green leaves are absent from these orchids and they live and feed off decaying vegetation across the land. Those who grow orchids typically do not seek out these kind, as they are not considered to be one of the more beautiful kinds. A common point of entry into orchid ownership is the Phalaenopsis orchid. It's appeal stems largely from the fact that it is one of the easiest to care for, requiring only that it isn't exposed to too much direct sunlight.
The Dendrobium orchid is unique in the sense that sometimes it is easy to care for and other times not so much. This particular flower blooms for 2-3 months, and requires bright light for a healthy look. There are many different kinds of this one flower, as is common with orchids. Their popularity has risen in recent times not only because of their obvious beauty, but also because more people are discovering that unlike common misconceptions, they are in fact quite easy to take care of.
If your're a beginner you may want to avoid Oncidium orchids at first because that can be a little more challenging to maintain, but they are a beautiful flower that should definitely be considered once you have a little experience with orchid care. They are best placed by a window which receives a decent amount of sun, but only for about half a day. Knowing all of these things and more is important if you are interested in planting and raising orchids to be healthy and beautiful.
