Many people these days are working longer and harder

. It is not uncommon for many people to work over the standard 40 hour week. In some cases people do not have a choice. For example, doctors, nurses and surgeons in very busy hospitals have to put in extremely long hours. However, there are many people who work long hours even though they do not have to. These people are addicted to work and are better described as workaholics.

The workaholic thinks about nothing else but their work. Their work becomes their sole purpose, it takes over their life. Because workaholics are so obsessed with their work they ignore the other responsibilities in their life such as their wife, children and friends.

Many people who are workaholics do not even realise that they are one. If you work long hours and your think a lot about your work then you could be a workaholic to. Like any addiction there are warning signs as follows:

1) On the very few occasions that you socialize you talk to people about nothing else but your work and you do not even realise that you are boring them.


2) You rarely go on a vacation and when you do you manage to take your work with you. Rather than relaxing on the beach or going for a swim you cannot resist the temptation to follow-up on your emails.

3) After you finish your work you are still thinking about it. At night you are even dreaming about it.

4) You regularly work over 50 hours a week.

5) You find it hard to relax when you should be relaxing and having fun.

You will also find that family and close friends keep mentioning to you that you work too hard or you should take a break now and again. If this is the case then you are showing the classic signs of being a workaholic. Workaholics think they are more productive because they work so hard. The reality is that they are less productive because the mind and body rarely gets a rest to recover. Therefore, you need to cure yourself by following these tips:

1. Make the commitment to work fewer hours. Aim for less than 40 hours a week and focus on being more productive within the fewer hours you have.

2. It is important that you do not bring work home with you. This includes your mind not just your laptop and reports. When you leave the office this signals a clear demarcation line between work ending and life beginning.

3. Make the commitment of taking more holidays. Write the dates in your dairy and organise time off in advance so that you cannot change it.

4. Mark at least one day every week that you spend away from work. Use this to revitalise yourself by spending time with family, friends or an activity that you enjoy doing.
