Importance of Toddler Communication
Toddler communication is one of the most important components and aspects of parenthood and to help in toddler learning and development. Imagine how you feel whenever they speak up and how they project themselves to emphasize or put forward a point to you. Toddlers comprehend what is being said to them in a literal way, thus it is important to learn to talk to toddlers in an effective way. Just say exactly what you mean, avoid using confusing words, metaphors or long words. Put yourself in their shoes, would you pay attention to someone who you simply don't understand what that person is saying? I won't.
As the toddler learns how to communicate with others and express themselves at this stage, it would be important to use real words and speak only two or three sentences at a time. Do always avoid using baby language no matter how tempting it may seem as it would confuse your toddler. The more you talk to your kids, the more it would motivate them to talk and express themselves thus learning to talk to toddlers is a very skill to have. Constantly talk to them and engage with them, the simplest conversation would improve the bond for you in them. The toddler will learn to pick up the conversational skills from the constant interaction with you. Repeat the daily conversational words and soon enough, you will realise that they will be able to respond or even repeat what you have told them. Point to objects when you mention the word, such as pointing to a physical orange when you mouth the word orange.
Similarly to adult communications, listening is a significant factor in toddler communication. Would you be turned off when you talk to someone who seems more interested in the happenings in the surroundings? Express interest when you talk to your toddlers to show them that you are listening to them. This would also encourage and make them aware that it is also important to listen to you when you speak. Don't simply ignore their attempts to talk to you, this would discourage them greatly. Patience is the key to everything, don't rush. Let them slowly take their time to learn.
Toddlers grow so fast, take this time to enjoy their company by showing real interest in their speech and effectively improving your toddler's communication. Don't forget, they are only young once. Do it right the first time round!
