Importing Japanese Cars Into Australia

Sometimes, you just can't find the right car for you

. Maybe you're looking for something different from anything you've seen on the market, or maybe you've got your heart set on that Nissan sports car that isn't available in Australia, either way, there are times when the car you want is something you'll have to import yourself. There are several options for people who are thinking about doing this: (1) You can find the car you want and arrange to purchase it as well as iron out the documents you will need to bring it into the country; (2) Hire an agent who will arrange everything for you; (3) Find someone in the country who's selling the car you want and just ship it to your location. Each option has it's own advantages, however, so you should consider your options before you decide on which one to go with.

In the first place, by importing a car from Japan you can have a car that no one else has, or at least one that you won't normally find in Australia. Buying a used Japanese car and shipping it into the country could also come out cheaper than buying one brand new here. And, if you're buying a used car, you'll probably find one in Japan that's in better condition than the ones you'll find here. But you should also take into consideration that most likely, Nissan parts for imported cars won't be readily available, so you will also need to find a supplier who can get you the parts you will need.

If you're going to be purchasing the car yourself and ironing out the documents and permits required, you would need to be fairly familiar with the process, which can be complicated depending on the kind of car you're importing. There are several documents you will need beforehand, like making sure the car is something you can legally drive in Australia, and you'll need to classify the car properly and pay the appropriate taxes. Unless you have a lot of free time to do this, it may take longer than you thought.

Another option is to check if you can find the car make and model you want in the country. That will eliminate a lot of the problems you'll face with customs and bringing a foreign car into the country because most likely, the previous owner already has most of the documents you would have needed if you were bringing it in yourself.

The easiest option is to just hire an agent who will arrange everything for you. Agents already have experience in doing this, so there won't be any delays in getting the papers together. All you have to do is give them the car make and model you want and your budget, and they'll work within your parameters.
