Improve Your Flexibility For Martial Arts At Any Age

The Flexibility System That Never Fails -Part 1

So you want to increase your flexibility for martial arts? Great, now where do you start?

There is some very useful information out there. There's books, DVDs, videos, articles (like this one), and much more. I suggest researching as much as you can, set a goal and go for it. In the mean time, read this article. I think you'll find it very useful.

You probably already know why flexibility is so critical to sports and why you should develop it. Just in case, I'd like to point out a couple major points.

- Increasing your flexibility will improve your range of motion, making any athletic movement you perform easier.

- Improved range of motion from increased flexibility will help prevent certain injuries.

- Certain stretches can be a great warm up, and improve your overall workout

- Stretching after your workout will begin the recovery process; regulating muscle tension and improving blood flow among other things.

How To Increase Your Flexibility At Any Age

"I'm just too old"

Have you ever heard somebody say that? "I'm just too old". Well, for some things that is probably true. But not when it comes to this. You can improve your flexibility at any age, regardless of size, shape or athletic ability. I'll say it one more time. You can improve your flexibility at any age, regardless of size, shape or athletic ability.

Now why do I say that? Well for one my own personal experience. I have several martial arts students ranging from ages 3 64. Now based solely on that age range, what age group do you think has the most significant increase in flexibility? Most people would say the kids and they would be half right. The children typically will have the quickest, most noticeable results for many reasons that we won't discuss right now. However, my adult students actually have the most significant increases.

Now why is this:

Well, there are 3 very important reasons

They have a desire to improve their flexibility

They are generally more disciplined and internally motivated than the children

They follow a winning system

Anybody can improve their flexibility if they have the desire and the discipline required to follow a winning system. Let me give you a brief example from my school.

EXAMPLE:

Let me give a brief overview. In my martial arts school we run a daytime Women's Fitness Kickboxing class that meets twice a week. In this class we do regular physical assessments to see how our students improved over the last several weeks. For the flexibility portion, we do a standard sit and reach measurement. In February of this year we performed one of these tests. Less than 6 weeks later we performed another one. Then we didn't do any test for 6 months and did another in October. Here a few of the results.

Student A

February Baseline test

March 25% Increased Flexibility

October 46% Increased Flexibility

Student B

February Injured, No Test

March Baseline test

October 12% Increased Flexibility

Student C

February Baseline test

March 17% Increased Flexibility

October 9% Increase from February, However a 7% Decrease from March

As you can see, Student A had incredible results. Student B has made a significant improvement, and Student C made great initial gains but fell slightly between March and October. Now why did this happen? Well for one every student follows the same exact system. The key differences we're in consistency. All three students we're very consistent in attendance between February and March. Students A & C both had great results while Student B was nursing a hamstring injury. Between March and October Student A's results went through the roof. Student B made a noticeable gain. Student C fell slightly from March but still showed improvement from her first test. Now why did this happen to Student C? There was a lack of consistent attendance. Her schedule got extremely hectic between August and October and she was not as consistent as she'd like to be.

Now what does this tell you? Well, there are two very important things.

1) Anybody can and will make gains in flexibility by being very well disciplined and following a winning system.

2) The best system will NOT work for you if you are not consistent and disciplined about it.

If you can follow my system, I can guarantee you will improve your flexibility in 90 Days or less. In Part 2 of "The Flexibility System That Never Fails" we will outline the foundation for the system and eliminate all myths on flexibility. To read the rest of the series gotohttp://blog.masterdannys.com/.
