Most of us wish to improve our quality of life

. There are self improvement books, articles, videos, and programs advertised every day. There are so many methods out there to improve your life, where does one start? Even if you find something that interests you and actually works, what can you do to assure that the improvement will be sustainable? Is it possible to create the future you desire and sustain it?

Here are twelve sustainable steps for a better quality of life:

Acknowledge that you deserve an excellent quality of life. The biggest obstacle to your own success and satisfaction is yourself. You will never get what you want unless you "allow" yourself to have it. Believe that you are worthy. If you aren't ready to believe it is true, then "tell" yourself it is so. If you hear yourself say it enough times, eventually you will believe it. Attitude is the foundation of making changes.

Assess your current life. Before you go anywhere, you must determine where you are starting from. What are you satisfied with? What areas need improvement? What are your weaknesses? What skills, interests, passions, and experiences do you have to draw from?


Define your "whole". This is where a holistic approach to goal setting begins. What do you manage? Who and/or what do you take care of? Who makes the decisions in your world? Who affects or is affected by those decisions? What kind of resources do you have? Who can help you achieve your goal? What is your financial situation?

What is your quality of life destination? Write down how you want your life to be right now, if you could have it anyway you want. What are your values? What are your relationships like? What kind of environment do you live in? What is your community like? What must I produce to achieve that quality of life? What must my physical environment look like far into the future? How must I be perceived as a human being and business person if I wish to have effective and satisfying personal and business relationships? The key is to write it down. If you write it, you are more apt to live it.

Post your holistic goal where you can see it every day. See it, read it, love it, and live it. Revise it as necessary. It is a dynamic document that will change as you go through life and circumstances change.

Change your beliefs and behaviors so you can move forward. If you keep on acting the same way and doing the same things, you are going to get the same results. Change begets change.

Take action to make your future happen! Dreaming without doing doesn't get you very far. Create an action list. What step can I do today to improve my quality of life? What can I do in the next week, next month, next year or in five years? Create a timeline of your life. Be specific in listing what, where, how and when.

Create a network. People know people who know people who have what we need. Take every opportunity to meet people that could potentially help you and build a relationship with them. It's not selfish, it's smart.

Get support. The skills and experiences of other people can make a profound difference in your success.You usually can't do it alone or at least not as well. Find mentors who have achieved what you want and model their philosophies and behaviors.

Monitor to see if you are on track with your desired future. This is a key step. Look for the earliest possible indicator that things are not the way you want them and take action get back on track. These indicators may be personal/social, environmental, and financial. Besides focusing on the business or the world, are you taking care of yourself?

Re-plan as necessary. Stuff happens in life. That's a fact. Be willing to take a step back, reassess, and re-plan if you find things have changed significantly.


Appreciate and value what you have. The easiest way to lose something is to take it for granted.
