Improving Written Communication Skills In Small Business

It is often quite surprising how many small business operators have trouble writing

. Improving the written communication skills of many small business owners will be a great confidence booster for them personally and boost their bottom line at the same time.

When someone lacks confidence at doing something, and lets face it, we all know our shortcomings, so by giving small business people better writing skills if they need them, boosts their confidence and they will then be more inclined to apply for more written work when or if the opportunity presented itself.

If they are on off-line small business they will benefit because they will be more confident to tender for more Government or city Council tenders. If they are an online business they will save a lot of money by being able to do the work themselves rather than outsourcing the work.

In fact, today its probably too easy to run an online business if they can't write. The outsourcing of this work can always be carried out by proficient writers at a reasonable cost.

Obviously though, to get the crme de la crme from the best writers, they are going to have to pay top dollar. This is increasing the costs of running the business enormously. To my way of thinking its also dangerous because they become totally dependant on others to do the work and any business who has such a potential security flaw is putting their business and themselves at enormous risk of losing the business to efficient competitors who can actually do the work themselves.

Also, because the Internet is about words and websites, if you can't do one or the other or both, its a bit like trying to swim in quicksand.

If the business is an off-line business the risk is obviously much less, simply because the dependency is not so high and mid-level writers to get a message across to their customers can be found at a cheaper price.

Good written communication skills are essential though for any business. But if a business wants to tender on Government or city council contracts it is an essential requirement. Firstly, if a low level of comprehension accompanies the inability to write then they could well end up putting in a price to do a job or supply a service when they haven't fully understood what exactly that service or tender was to do. They may well be quoting/estimating on something that they haven't understood properly.

All tenders, but especially Government and city council tenders, are legal contracts drawn up by officials who are responsible for public money, so they are extra precise and detailed and should be over sighted by a lawyer before submission. If anyone is uncertain of their written and comprehension skills this is a must do to make certain that you haven't made any errors in understanding precisely what has been quoted on.

If you are unsure of your own writing skills and don't want anyone to know about the difficulty, then start your own diary either online as a personal blog or off-line in an exercise book or diary. The only way you will improve this skill is to simply practice it. Write, write and write some more and you will find it becomes progressively easier. To improve comprehension, reading skills and vocabulary then just start reading a book. Any book but find one that tells a good story and will keep you interested. It is said that any person who can read, can educate themselves and I personally believe this to be true.
