Improving Your Typing Skills To Help Your Freelance Career.
With the rise of the personal computer, laptops
, Smartphones and tablet PCs, typing has become an essential part of everybody's working life. Years ago it used to be that the typing pool would do all the typing you would need but today people are expect to be able to type as part of their job. The typewriter has become an obsolete piece of equipment so in order to improve productivity people need to be able to use a keyboard and word processor quickly and efficiently.
Unless you are a
freelance writer then it is probably safe to say that your typing skills may leave a little to be desired. Being able to type takes a lot of practise to get your fingers used to finding the keys, but if you can type quickly then it will greatly improve your productivity and give you an advantage in your career. Being able to type quicker can mean getting those important reports out on time and perhaps being able to leave work on time for a change. If you do a lot of typing then it is well worth while considering learning to type quicker.
Below are gathered a few helpful suggestions to help you improve the speed at which you can type. As long as you are prepared to spend some time on improving your technique then you will be able to realise some improvements which should help in your career, which ever profession you are in as most now need some form of skill at typing.
When typing a good posture will help to make sure you are comfortable and can continue to type for longer periods. Make sure that you are situated at a desk sitting upright with feet flat on the floor. Your forearms and wrists should be raised slightly above your elbows with your arms hanging at your side. It is important not to rest your wrist on the desk or keyboard as this doesn't allow the greatest amount of free movement. This will help them to move freely so all the movement does not come directly from the wrist but from the whole arm, which will help avoid injuries such as repetitive strain injury. Ensure also that your monitor is set up correctly to prevent too much movement of the head and neck while working. If you make sure your posture is sound then you can avoid injury and should be comfortable to work for longer periods.
Depending on your writing style you might find that you cannot type for long periods without having to pause to think about the next thing you are going to write. If you are a
freelance translator then you might have to do some research or check the spelling of words before you can continue to type, or other people might not have all their ideas straight in their head so the writing cannot flow as smoothly as they might like. If you can't do this then it might be worth considering writing content out by hand before typing out so that you have a whole page to write out. When learning to type quicker it is useful to be able to have a more consistent writing speed that will help you to learn the skills needed to find keys quickly and learn the muscle movements needed.
There are simple typing programs available on the internet that can be used to train your skills. These can be used online or downloaded and can greatly improve your speed if you don't want to test your new skills out on your actual projects at work. Using these programs can help you to get plenty of practise in especially when you are new to typing on a keyboard. The more you can practise the more familiar you will become with the keyboard layout and the more your fingers will begin to develop a muscle memory that will mean you can find the keys more easily. If you make a habit of looking at the screen when typing then you will learn to trust your finger movements and can more easily see any errors as you type.
Although this might not go down well with your employer, using online chat can be a great way to improve your typing skills. Chatting online with friends on programs such as MSM messenger and Skype can be a great way to get plenty of practise at typing and typing quickly as you have to reply to threads and conversations on the spot. The online chat programs are great because people don't mind if you make the odd little mistake but you can try and perfect your typing and get plenty of practise to help build those finger muscles ready for your next report or written assignment.
When using computers it is suggested to take regular breaks to help your eyes and back. But it is also important to rest your wrists and arms to help prevent injuries in the long term. These breaks don't need to be long perhaps even just making a phone call instead or open some mail. Moving away from the keyboard will help to remove any stress build up within your arms which can cause problems with posture and affect your ability to type quickly. If you begin to become tense then this can transfer throughout your whole body so take some time out to relax and then you can make sure your typing is at its best.
