In Future Explorers On Space Flights Will Be In For Long Trips

Interest in space flights may go back in human history even further than Greek mythology

. However, it was only after the Second World War that dreams, mythology and science fiction became reality. Nationalist rivalry between Russia and America saw vast sums of public money being injected into programs. As is well known, Russia put the first man into orbit and America landed on the Moon. It was quite disappointing to find that it is a sand ball, not made of cheese but dust.

After it had been ascertained that the romantic Moon is little more than a disappointing lump enthusiasm waned somewhat. It was realized that that longer trips would be necessary in the search for more interesting discoveries. Also, unsolved economic, demographic and philosophical issue began to demand attention and resources. Wisely, nations decided to collaborate rather than compete, thus cutting down costs.

Perhaps associated with more level-headed approaches is the entry of women into space travel. The first woman to conceive a child in space was Valentin Tereshkova. Her first flight as an astronaut was in 1963 and she became a national hero from that point on and remained enthusiastic about exploration for the rest of her life.

Since the Moon proved something of a disappointment it has become apparent that the search for additional resources and for life outside of Earth's orbit will be a long and difficult process. Astronauts will have to spend long periods of time living away from Earth.

Physiologically human bodies have evolved in Earth's gravitational field. Prolonged periods in artificial conditions are not good for fertility as is evident from falling fertility rates in urban environments. Since long periods in small capsules, with only a rare outing into limitless expanses are unlikely to benefit procreation, careful research on female bodies is essential. Suni Williams will have spent 194 days in space before she returns to Earth and Valeri Polyakov spent more than 400 days orbiting. This is almost long enough for a person to start feeling that he no longer belongs on Earth.

The first privately funded unmanned supply flight from Florida to a station somewhere in space took place in 2012, signaling a change in the American way of funding research but in China it is still government funding that is funding the program. In future it will be necessary for supply ships to travel further if exploration is extended and so they will become prohibitively expensive. The solution will be to make space stations independent.

Independent travelers will go outside their ship to play. They might devise silly recreations like golf. They will grow delicacies cultivated especially and have romantic liaisons in lovers' alcoves located in private areas of the station. Freedom from gravity will probably allow stations to evolve into cities that do not need skyscrapers.

Environmental issues and psychological problems will have to be solved in ways that are quite distinct from those used on the tiny home planet. Children born and raised on future space flights might look back at Earth as a remote place with the same sort of fascination that Earth children have shown in dinosaurs ever since they became extinct.
