Introduction

Special education system is designed for special students and is composed of four main types wherein inclusion is just one of them. Comparatively speaking, inclusion applied on special ed schools refers to a concept contrary to that of both exclusion and mainstreaming. Before inclusion was developed, most people who were diagnosed with learning disabilities had to take their education by means of exclusion. But then, learning impaired individuals suffered some negative side effects from such approach. This paved way to the development of new and more functional approaches in providing quality special education for students with learning disorders.

What inclusion really means?


The main concept of inclusion is to provide the students with more opportunities of interaction with their classmates and peers that greatly develop their social skills and make them feel that they belong to the group and are not different from the rest. Students with learning disabilities spend most of their subjects under regular classes and with some extra but more intensive class sessions exclusively for learning impaired individuals alone. Even though these special students get to be in regular classes along with their classmates that don't have any learning disability, they receive assistive and special attention from their teachers. This assistance however is limited in a way that doesn't cause disturbance or disrupt the focus of the whole class. Special ed schools have been utilizing the inclusion approach in their special education system generally meant for students with mild to moderate cases of learning disabilities.

For some reasons, inclusion is the most widely adopted mode of implementing special education among special ed schools. Listed below are just some of the many reasons why inclusion works the best:

Inclusion, unlike mainstreaming and exclusion helps students feel that they are not different from others. Learning impaired students feel a sense of belonging with most of their academic activities done with their regular classmates and peers.

Along with the opportunity is the challenge to do better in school since their sense of competitiveness is constantly tested.

In most cases, learning impaired individuals have poor social skills and are most likely to be alone than with groups and friends. Opportunities to mingle and interact with other people are provided by inclusion and can have significant impact in enhancing the person's skills in social interactions.

Teachers provide special assistance on their learning disabled students in their regular classes. This helps the students to get more motivated and encouraged towards their studies ad can even help them improve their study skills.

The bad side. . .

Generally, inclusion is an effective and so far the best and most appropriate approach to apply on special ed schools. However, there are also some disadvantages with the application of such approach:

Providing assistance on special students during regular classes may inevitably interfere and disrupt the focus and attention of the whole class.


There can also be less assurance that teachers in special ed schools are well equipped with sufficient knowledge, training, and skills in effectively handling special students on their regular classes.

Since they are the poorest academic performer in the entire class, learning impaired students may be too shy to raise their questions and concerns in front of the whole class.

There could also be less communication and coordination between teachers and the special education department which can directly affect the functionality and quality of special education.

Because of its favorable design on its concepts and functionality, inclusion has become a favorite choice among special ed schools. But then, it is also essential to take regard on both the good and bad side of the said approach to special education.
