Indianapolis Colts Tickets - Colts Face Bob Sanders Situation - Again
Bob Sanders is down - and this time he might be out
, too. The Indianapolis Colts' hard-hitting safety was 100 percent healthy (for once) going into the start of the 2010-11 football season, but this was all too good to be true for the oft-injured player. In his very first game back from a torn biceps injury last year that derailed him for the season, Sanders tore his biceps tendon in the other arm, causing an all-too-familiar scenario for the Colts and putting Sanders in danger of losing his job with the team.
Sanders, the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and a two-time Pro Bowl safety, is a precious commodity to the Colts' defense when he's healthy, but keeping him off the IR has become a major problem in Indianapolis. Just the fact that the Colts are willing to stick around and pay Sanders the big bucks to sit on the bench while recovering from a revolving door of injuries should speak volumes of his worth when he's healthy, but is Bob Sanders really worth the money?
That's the question circulating around Indianapolis this week as the Colts once again look to replace their beast of a safety in the lineup. Yet again, it looks like backup Melvin Bullitt will step in for Sanders this season, but how long will the Colts continue with this never-ending act of waiting for Bob Sanders to heal?
Last year, Sanders began the 2009-10 season with a knee injury stemming from the 2008 season. After sitting out the first part of the year, the safety played just two games with the Colts before injuring his left biceps tendon, landing him a place on the IR for the rest of the year. It's obvious that injuries are a recurring problem for Sanders, and we're not just talking over the last couple seasons.
The 29-year-old safety, in his seven years in the National Football League, has yet to play all 16 games in one regular season. In fact, he's missed more career games (49) than he's played (47), yet his absolute brilliance on the football field makes him a hard player for any team to cut. For the Colts, however, the decision to release him rather than pay him the $5 million he's worth next year and $7 million after that might be an easier one thanks to Melvin Bullitt.
Bullitt is a humble player who accepted demotion this year to be Sanders' backup even though he's good enough to be a starter on any NFL team. The safety began his tenure with the Colts as an undrafted rookie out of Texas A&M, and he was an absolute asset to the team last year in Indy's road to the Super Bowl. Melvin Bullitt is a name that will sell Indianapolis Colts tickets even if Bob Sanders isn't on the roster, and he's slowly but surely gaining the confidence of Colts fans while Bob Sanders' stock declines.
That's not to say the Colts are over the idea of Bob Sanders' return. News out of Indy prior to Week 2 of the regular season suggests that Sanders' expected recovery time from his recent biceps injury is 10-12 weeks, which means he could still return for the postseason. If he wants any kind of future with the Colts, Bob Sanders needs to get healthy - and stay healthy. Don't expect the Colts to keep him around if he's out for the entire season again this year, but in the meantime Colts fans can rest assured Melvin Bullitt will do a solid job as a starter.
