Industrial Machinery Moving Tips
.PLANNING - Planning is the key to an efficient move and should start one to two years in advance
. If you anticipate and provide solutions to problems beforehand, your move can run smoothly and save you money. Develop a practical calendar schedule to help you.
.THE SCOPE OF WORK - The scope of work is a written proposal developed by your planning group that clearly delineates the responsibilities for every aspect of the move. It will serve as a guide for you and the mover, and all outside contractors throughout the job. The scope of work should include: Names of machines, weight and a general description; Where the machines are being moved from and to; Loading and unloading; Disassembly and reassembly; Permits for transport, construction and hook-ups; etc.
.DEVELOPING A LAYOUT - Dimensional drawings of the equipment at the old site, as well as a proposed layout indicating the desired placements at the new site, are extremely helpful.
.DEVELOPING A PROJECT SCHEDULE - The project schedule will give you an instant overview of the scope of work and help you keep track of milestones and progress made by all contractors involved.
.THE BEST TIME TO MOVE - Your companys production schedule will determine your best time to move. You have the option of moving a section at a time or everything at once.
.COST FACTORS - The costs incurred during a move largely depend on the machinery involved. Larger, heavier equipment usually costs more to move because it takes more time and manpower. Costs increase further if the machinery requires disassembly or special handling.
.CHOOSING A MOVER - With larger, heavier, delicate, or costly equipment, it makes more sense to seek an experienced mover. A professional field engineer will evaluate and qualify your machinery moving needs at the preliminary meetings, often writing two or three proposals to insure the best procedures will be employed during your move.
.CONTRACTING FOR SERVICES AND SUPPLIERS - Placing the total responsibility including all hook-ups and construction on your contractor is a good idea. With a prime contractor you may pay slightly more due to the mark-ups on sub-contractors, but ultimately you will save on the added supervision you will need to manage the project.
.VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT USED IN THE MOVE - Most movers have their own trucks and equipment. If existing equipment does not meet the requirements of the job, a reputable mover will design special equipment to facilitate the move.
.COMMON OVERSIGHTS - Among the most common oversights are pieces of equipment completely forgotten while planning, like items on the roof or in the basement, such as compressors, filters and air conditioners.
.PERMITS - Permits for the transportation of equipment and machinery are the responsibility of the mover. If you are acting as the prime contractor, permits for plumbing, electrical work, and construction are your responsibility. You are also responsible for all permits pertaining to the operation of your plant. Local police are usually helpful in controlling traffic on roadways on moving day.
.MOVING INVENTORY AND OFFICE FURNITURE - Inventory and office furniture should be moved much like heavy equipment. Determine whether you will move it all at once or in sections. Carefully plan a layout. Color or number code pieces for easy relocation.
.LEASED EQUIPMENT - Check the cost-effectiveness of leasing new machinery from a supplier closer to the new plant site, as opposed to renewing the old lease and paying for moving the equipment.
.COMMUNICATION - Make sure there is the appropriate communication service at the new plant site such as phone lines and internet access. Movers may need to communicate with you or other members of their crew to coordinate vehicle arrivals or solve unforeseen problems.
.LIGHTING - Adequate lighting is needed by the movers to place the machinery according to the layout.
.CONSTRUCTION CLEAN-UP - If construction is necessary make sure all debris are cleared away by the respective contractors.
.MACHINE MAINTENANCE - Since your machines will be down for the move, consider cleaning, overhauling, or painting them at this time.
.INSURANCE AND BONDING - All reputable, professional movers carry insurance to protect their customers.
.APPOINT ON-SITE REPRESENTATIVE - Appoint a member of your planning group to be on site for the move. He should have the authority to make on-the-spot decisions when unforeseen problems arise.
.USE THE SCOPE OF WORK TO CHECK THE MOVE - Towards the completion of the relocation, go over the scope of work step-by-step to make sure that all sub-contractors have satisfactorily completed their jobs. Any items that have been missed should be recorded in a punch list for the mover.
