Industrial Pallets
The most fundamental skid or pallet is formed into a box shape and constructed using heat-treated wood. In order for reliable transport using a forklift, pallet jack or other devices to lift the pallet, there are specialized openings to allow for lifting. Securing a pallet while in transport is often done using shrink wrap, stretch wrap or safety strapping. Depending on the country, the dimensions of pallets change. The most commonly used pallet in North America however, is the 42 inch by 42 inch square pallet largely for use in the grocery industry. By using a square shape, the load on the pallet is stable and far less likely to tip. Other special dimensions are used to accommodate loading dock doors, storage containers and warehouse specifications. When necessary, pallets may likewise be designed for basic doorways.
A number of pallets are constructed using galvanized metals, aluminum, engineered wood products (such as plywood or particle board) hard plastic or even paper.
Originally the pallet was produced to assist with export and import of goods overseas. Because of the introduction of the pallet, the military was able to transport goods more effectively and free up able men for service. As the need for safe, reliable cargo transport increased, so did the pallet industry. The pallet industry has now become a standard for shipment, cargo transport and global export and import of goods.
The pallet has been designed for the following: 1) Reliable transportation, 2) Storage of products (e.g. stockyard, shed, or warehouse), 3) Simple stacking and 4) To comply with Food Safety standards.
The use of a pallet is important when trying to safely store objects of various shapes and sizes. For example, the pallet is widely used to store products in manufacturing facilities that cannot be lifted manually. This is where design and quality of components is critical. The items may be stored for a prolonged period of time and therefore the wood used needs to be treated so there is no chance of rotting or breaking down. Vast majority of pallets use heat-treated wood that is heated for 30 minutes at a temperature of 56 C (132.8 F).
High standards inside the food industry have further enforced the use of pallets for shipping and transportation. Shipping massive and otherwise immobile products is made possible with the use of pallets. In order to meet the specifications for international shipments as laid out by International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No.15, pallets must be specially treated to prevent transport of disease, insects and other infectious materials from other countries.
Food companies employ the use of pallets in order to meet the storage of goods standards by raising product off the ground in facilities. Pallets have become an integral part of the food industry being used in warehouses, on production lines and in freezers. Another popular use of pallets has been for stacking purposes. Because the pallets are unvarying, balancing is a simple task as is finding ample storage space for merchandise. As a result, forklift operators can very easily manoeuvre product and stack it in an orderly fashion. Pallets also allow for storage inside other containers such as shelving units, racks and other sealed storage units.
Three things to think about when choosing a pallet company are: safety standards, policies on maintenance and repair and recycling programs. Due to the contemporary environmental concerns, more companies are beginning to recycle their wood products. Effortless repairs are often needed, pallet reconfiguration may be necessary or perhaps a few more nails or securing devices need to be replaced. As with anything, some companies are more diligent in maintaining the condition of the skid's structure. In order to save money, look into using recycled or used pallets. This may save you money in the long run but be sure the company's reputation is solid and their product standards are high.
Discounts may apply for returning aged or used pallets. Try to make deals wherever possible. Though the use of pallets may be seen as insignificant, their use may conserve you money, provide storage alternatives and assist you greatly in the operation of your business.
