. While the pundits maintain the only reason you would bother with a proxy server is to bypass IP blocks, there are a number of legitimate reasons for using a proxy server. Before we explore these reasons, a primer on how they work may well be in order.

Let's say you're server A and you're trying to speak to your friend, server B. Normally, all you have to do is communicate with server B. But, let's say server B is locked in a closet. He may not be able to hear you. Access between the two of you is essentially denied. Now, imagine your cellphone is proxy C. Using proxy C, you can bypass the fact that he's in a closet and talk to him. This is how a proxy server works.

Keep this in mind: not only can an industrial proxy server be used to bypass blocks, it can be used to impose them as well. It can prevent access to web pages on specifically targeted URLs, effectively censoring some sites. In this case, the proxy is being used as a kind of extreme content filter. As it prevent direct connectivity to the Internet, it can provide the same kind of security as a firewall.

To be sure, most people won't like the idea of using a proxy server as a kind of firewall. But, the truth of the matter is it's very effective. Furthermore, the proxy can be used to foil would-be hackers and malware malcontents. A well-placed industrial proxy server makes your IP address extremely difficult to access. This means your personal files, hard drives and computers will be protected.

What if you don't want to buy a proxy server? You can use your existing Internet server to set up a kind of faux-proxy. This free proxy service allows you to filter certain sites and prevent these site from access your computer. Keep in mind, not all servers provide this kind of filtering service, so be sure to refer to your contract or customer service rep for more information.
