The information technology (IT) field covers a vast range of employment opportunities. According to the U.S. Department of Labor statistics 264,000 jobs were held by computer and information systems managers in 2006. The amount of jobs available in this occupation is expected to grow over the next decade, as more technology is introduced into the business world. One job search site for Washington, D.C. and its surrounding cities has over 3,386 employment opportunities in the IT field listed where the next highest listing is 1,093 for Management and Supervision positions.

These job search sites have many Reston information technology jobs. The largest group (1,255) listed positions in the general information technology area. Software development (719) and Operations and Support (686) were the next two highest areas of IT employment offered. Of the 3,386 positions listed, at least 2,818 required a college degree. Of the 2,064 positions listed specifically in the Washington, D.C. area, 1,052 required a college degree. Many of the listings did not provide details as to requirements or salary being offered. The salaries that were provided ranged from $50 per hour up to $150,000 per year. Most salaries were dependent upon experience and knowledge levels.

Most require that the IT manager has experience in a general business area, as well as with communication and technology. Those companies that hire IT personnel without degrees usually require the people to have many years of actual work experience and expertise in specific areas. Many of the IT computer and information systems managers earn their MBAs while working in the IT field.

Educational Opportunities in the IT Field

Many universities offer information systems management education near Arlington. These degrees incorporate the training needed for IT management in these areas. Quite a few offer online courses to make it easier for those who cannot attend traditional universities. Some companies will financially assist their IT employees to earn degrees.

Some insurance companies, government agencies, and colleges often offer internships to students working towards a bachelor's or master's degree in the information technology field. Many other companies also offer internships to students working towards IT degrees. These internships frequently turn into full-time positions with the company upon graduation.
