Innovative Employees

This past weekend Mashable, the world's largest independent news source covering digital culture

, social media and technology, posted an infograph on what it takes to be a Social Media Strategist. The infograph not only illustrated what it takes to become one, but what it will take to remain one in the future.

Like any job, it is not enough to know how to use the existing tools and implement existing strategies. Social Media Strategists are responsible for coming up with new strategies, for adapting to new forms of online communication and for adopting new technologies. They have to be the advocates of change, the forward thinkers and the people training their internal staff and managing the expectations of their clients.

Of course, it is not only Social Media Strategists who are responsible for providing the organisations they work for with new ideas, it's all members of every company. The world has recently come out of one of history's worst global recessions. And in many ways, it still hasn't fully come out of it. There are many industries that remain a long way off from recovery and some analysts predict we might face a double-dipped recession. What does this mean for the world of the working? It means that employers still have the upper hand. With so many people looking for work and so few jobs actually available, employers have their pick. They have the chance to get over-qualified people working for them and pay them far less than they deserve. So if you're just starting out, you'll have a lot to prove. And more than what you promise at the interview you'll have to deliver on those promises every day after you get the job. It is expected now that every employee is thinking of ways they can make their company grow, is adding value that can almost directly translate to increased profits for the organisation. The days of sliding by doing the bare minimum are long since over and this is even more true for small companies and start-ups.

Just like every comment that you leave on a blog post should add value and every tweet and conversation on Facebook, so too should every day at your place of employment. On your way to work in the morning think about the ways you personally can grow the company you work for. What are the skills you have that your company could benefit from, or that their clients could benefit from. Then start writing an implementation strategy. It could be anything from a guide to writing web content, to a social media training PowerPoint presentation your boss can sell to their clients. It can be internal team building activities that can help raise the morale of your office and get the staff working harder. All of these things will result in more and better work for your company, which will ultimately please management and bring you closer to the raise you think you deserve.

First must come the desire to improve things, then the ideas of how to do it, and only then can the implementation strategies to make those ideas happen come. Are you the type of innovative employee companies are desperate for?
